Today’s preseason game of the Atlanta Hawks vs. New Orleans Pelicans was interesting, to say the least. Watching Zion Williamson and Trae Young on the court was unlike anything. Williamson, standing at 6’6 and 284 pounds, looked positively fearsome in front of the 163 pounds Trae.

But Young is anything but scared. Relatively small for an NBA player, Trae uses his diminutive size to his advantage. Often catching defenders unawares, Young has made a name for himself as a skilled offense master. The preseason matchup against the Pelicans today is yet another example of his God-given skills.

Zion Williamson’s defensive play is the Pelicans’s highlight. Might even go as far as to say it has raised their ceiling. For a player weighing 284 pounds, Williamson shows incredible athleticism and explosive dunks. But Trae Young‘s compact frame helped him manoeuver around the formidable Pelican.

When we think of NBA players, our mind automatically brings up images of freakishly tall, huge men with trunks for arms. Clearly, that’s a stereotype and Young is proving it so.

The Athletic’s Pete Zayas says that Trae’s small size allows him to change directions faster, leaving the defense in the dust. This was in 2019. He was only in his second year then, and already with a vision and maturity far beyond his years. Since then, he has only become better.

Zion Williamson’s run-in with legendary “High-Flyers”

Trae Young certainly sent Williamson “flying” in the preseason matchup. It also might have been a tad bit embarrassing for the big man, Zion. Ranking among the top candidates for the NBA Slam Dunk contest is Zion Williamson in the 3rd position. Clearly, they aren’t the only ones who are of the opinion.

The official handle of the Pelicans posted an iconic video showing legendary “High-Flyers” Dominique Wilkins and Nance Sr. meeting Zion. “Nique, Nance, & Z. High flyers linkup.”

The Pelicans’s star has 223 dunks in his 114 career games. People would come from all over when they heard the power forward was playing at Duke. And the dunks were a major part of his popularity then and now.

His size and the power that comes with it did make him the top prospect for the NBA draft. But even more impressive was the speed and strength that came with it. Though the coaches and GMs would prefer him to decrease his weight, the kid still has time to grow. Who knows, maybe he might grow to the height of Porzingis or Marjanovic. What do you say?
