The San Antonio Spurs came into tonight’s game hoping to get the better of the short-handed Grizzlies. But in a complete turn of events, Memphis overcame Wemby’s crazy double-double and finished 99-97. The Spurs started strong, finishing the first quarter 30-18. But they had an abysmal second quarter, scoring a season-low 14 points while shooting 26.1% from the field.

It was exactly this that frustrated the young big man. Talking to the press post-game, Wembanyama said, “I remember having a thought in the first half, like when we were up by a lot, I didn’t put the nail in the coffin.” He had 31 points, 16 rebounds, three blocks, and five assists for the night.

San Antonio ranks at the bottom of the Western Conference with a 15-55 record while the Grizzlies fare slightly better at 13 with 24-47. If the Spurs don’t win at least five of the last 12 games in the season, the chances of them closing 2023-24 with the worst record in franchise history will become a reality. The last time the ‘Lone Star State’ had a terrible record was in 1997 with a 20-62 record.

But there is no arguing that Victor Wembanyama is shaping up to be a “generational talent”. With tonight’s double-double, his total for the season comes to 38 out of the 62 games Wemby’s played.

The Grizzlies’ already long injury list got another victim – Desmond Bane. He was sidelined with a sore back as Ja Morant, Marcus Smart, Brandon Clarke, Luke Kennard, and Derrick Rose continue to be on the injury report. With tonight’s victory, Memphis practically put the nail in the coffin of San Antonio for the 13th time.

The last time Pop and his Spurs managed to get a win against the Grizzlies was on December 23, 2020. Jaren Jackson Jr. was the best man of the night as he finished with a team-high 28 points and the game-winning basket with 1.2 seconds left. Santi Aldama had his own double-double as he scored 15 points, 13 rebounds, and three assists.

After showcasing remarkable control of the game in the opening quarter today, limiting the Grizzlies to 23.8% shooting, San Antonio had to go through one of the worst second quarters. But they tried their best to come back up in the final quarter. With 18.8 seconds remaining, the Spurs hit consecutive three-pointers to tie the game at 97.

But Jackson’s winning seven-footer and Wembanyama’s missed fadeaway triple at the buzzer tipped the scales in favor of Memphis. With 12 more to go, the Spurs will look to regain momentum and avoid the worst for the franchise. ,
