The Phoenix Suns have finally started to come along. While many expected the Suns to be instant title contenders this season, multiple injuries to their superstars stopped them from reaching their maximum potential. But with Bradley Beal, Devin Booker, and Kevin Durant finally back in full health, the Suns are starting to assert their dominance. They are 4-3 in January. However, many believe the Suns need a true point guard to guide the traffic with their Big 3.

JJ Redick and Co. discussed the Suns’ biggest concern and analyzed if the Suns really need a point guard to turn their season around.

Phoenix Suns do not need a Point Guard

NBA legend JJ Redick collaborated with Steve Jones Jr. and Nekias Duncan on the Old Man & The Three Things Podcast. During the episode, Jones revealed his thoughts about Kevin Durant and Co. needing a point guard. “I don’t think that the Suns need a point guard. That Beal, Booker, Allen, Durant, Nurkic line-up has a 132.9 offensive rating. What are we doing?” the former Nets assistant coach said. According to Jones, the Suns do not need a true point guard because of the kind of offense they run. Phoenix has three offensive juggernauts in Beal, Booker, and KD, and a point guard might not bring anything new.

The Suns have managed to get back in the playoff picture after an abysmal start to the season. They are currently 8th in the Western Conference standings with a 21-18 record. Beal, Booker, and KD have been playing at an elite level, and no team would want to face the Big 3 in the playoffs.

Steve Jones Jr. also reminded the NBA World what happened last season when the Suns had one of the best point guards in the league.

The Suns do not want to repeat last season’s mistake

The Phoenix Suns had Chris Paul as their point guard last season. Despite being one of the Greatest point guards in NBA history, the Denver Nuggets shut CP3 down in the playoffs. The Suns faced Nikola Jokić and Co. in last season’s Western Conference Semifinals. Paul played only two games in that series as he injured his groin mid-series. Even in the two games Paul played, he could not perform at his best.

The Nuggets’ smart defensive tactics shut CP3 down. Paul averaged only 9.5 points and 5.5 assists in that series. Jones believes the Suns might face the same fate if they go with a true point guard this season. Instead, they should build on what they already have and focus on winning a Championship.
