There are very few families in the world of sports that are as well known as the Currys. The dynamic combo of Sonya and Dell Curry won hearts both on and off the court. Their romantic tale, which began at Virginia Tech, appeared to embody the strength of love and commitment. The recent disclosure of their painful divorce after 33 years of marriage, however, has sent shockwaves across the sports world.

And recently, Sonya Curry made a guest appearance on a podcast, Got It from my Momma. There she spoke about her fears as a parent and the importance of having a family.

Sonya and Dell Curry’s love story is iconic. It all started one evening when Sonya’s volleyball coach asked Dell, a budding NBA player, to observe one of her games. Dell got the nerve to take Sonya out on a date following the match, and the rest, as they say, is history. The couple’s love affair grew, resulting in their marriage in 1988.

Dell Curry had an outstanding NBA career, spanning three decades. It included stops with the Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers, Milwaukee Bucks, Toronto Raptors, and Charlotte Hornets. Sonya was a continuous presence by his side throughout this remarkable adventure, till their second child was born in 1990. The Currys were the symbolic NBA family. They engaged themselves to fans with their everlasting support for one another and their children’s developing basketball careers.

Sonya and Dell Curry surprised the world by announcing the end of their marriage, despite looking to be the epitome of a happy couple in the media. Their trial separation, which lasted over a year, eventually led them to the heartbreaking choice to part ways. And recently when Sonya appeared as a guest on a podcast, she spoke about her difficulties as a parent. She said, “I had lots of fear. Like watching them every day, i was nervous as a parent. Just like most parents, you don’t want to mess up, you don’t want to mess with your children up. If we didn’t raise them the world would do it.”

“And so there was a lot of fear in my parenting and my approach to it. Cause in our situation we were young black men that really need to know how things are. And being with their dad at home and having a great career, things are just not going to be handed to you. So you have got to understand the importance of family”.

The blame game after 15 years

When Sonya filed for divorce, alleging Dell’s “marital misconduct” as the cause for their separation, the divorce proceedings took a nasty turn. Dell replied by accusing Sonya of “acts of illicit sexual misconduct” throughout their marriage. And he even refused to allow her to stay in their joint house. A contentious alimony fight occurred, with Sonya claiming that she began seeing her new partner months after her official separation from Dell. Sonya made the shocking assertion that Dell had many indiscretions during their 33-year marriage. She said that Dell’s cheating was known to their family and close friends for years, establishing it as an open secret. Sonya first refused to reveal Dell, but after he publicly accused her of adultery, she felt obligated to clear the air.
