The hoop community has been buzzing since Luka Doncic got traded to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis. Some are even calling it the biggest mid-season trade in history. And many are still trying to figure out Nico Harrison’s reasoning behind the shocking decision. Imagine Stephen Curry getting traded from GSW. Fans loved Luka just like Warriors fans love Curry. After the smoke descends, it might have something to do with Luka’s pending contract extension and his former teammate, Kyrie Irving’s future.
As per veteran insider Brian Windhorst, “I think what’s important to realize here is that they have their other star player, Kyrie Irving, is in his early 30s. They have a timeline that has to match Kyrie.” Yes, Uncle Drew is in the second year of his three-year deal and has a $43.9 million player option for next season. There are speculations he will ink a multi-year extension with the Mavs this summer, especially after Luka’s departure.
And Windhorst claims the Mavs believe they are good enough to win this year, which might have led to Doncic getting traded, “They also wanted to get a player who could help them win now… That’s how they identified Anthony Davis.” Even Nico shared a similar sentiment while justifying parting ways with the Slovenian Sensation, “I do believe that we positioned ourselves to win now and also win in the future. And that’s ultimately the goal and why we’re here.”

Moreover, the Dallas franchise was reportedly reluctant to offer Luka a $345 million extension that he was eligible for going forward, as the ESPN veteran remarked, “They didn’t believe in giving him the $350 million. That is a controversial and potentially catastrophic decision.” While Doncic’s talent is undeniable, there were major concerns about his conditioning and work ethic. The franchise likely did not want to lock their money on a superstar, not completely all-in.

Meanwhile, adding AD gives them an All-NBA caliber two-way player in the middle of his prime and has proven championship experience. Of course, Davis continues to have a dominant season, averaging 25.7 points and nearly 12 rebounds. Like it or not, he could be the piece the Mavs needed to get over the hump.
On the other hand, Doncic has already begun prepping for his debut in the Purple and Gold uniform.
What’s your perspective on:
Did the Mavericks just make the biggest mistake by trading Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis?

When will Luka Doncic debut for the Lakers?
As shocking as it was, the deal is final and Luka is officially a Laker. Obviously, everyone is waiting for him to make his debut alongside LeBron James. However, the superstar is currently recovering from a left calf strain. Yes, he has not suited up since Christmas Day because of the unfortunate injury.
But, veteran insider Marc J. Spears revealed he is nearing his return, “He’s in the facility today getting a physical. I’m hearing he’s targeting next week. The Lakers play at home against Utah next Monday, and on the road in Utah next Wednesday, a potential return from his calf injury.”

Adding Luka makes them a lethal offensive team as he is averaging 28.1 points and nearly eight assists. Combine that with LeBron’s dominance and the team might be unstoppable on offense. But the concern is around their defense. While Luka’s defense has been questionable at times, LBJ has also slowed down because of his age. And that could be a problem for the Purple and Gold franchise.
We could find out the duo’s potential next week when Doncic makes his debut. If things go right, Luka could turn the LA team into title contenders from the get-go. What are your expectations from his Lakers debut?
