On February 8th, amidst the NBA trade deadline, the Curry Clan was struck with a lightning bolt in the form of a surprise trade. Seth Curry, 33, has been traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Charlotte Hornets. Curry has lived a nomadic NBA life, bouncing from team to team. Might he be approaching a “retirement plan” trade leading him closer to his hometown roots? How is his wife, Callie, taking the news?

Callie Rivers Curry recently shared an Instagram Story with a photo of a “doll” Curry in a Hornets’ jersey, tagging Dell Curry and Seth Curry with the question, “Is it @wardell5 or sdotcurry?”  fueling speculation. Fans cannot seem to make out if Callie is excited or confused. However, there’s enough data for us to infer that it’s the latter, excitement is afoot in the Curry household as he travels back to his roots in Charlotte.

Papa Dell, father to both Stephen and Seth, spent 10 years out of his 16-year-long stint in the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets. Senior Curry retired holding the most points scored in the Hornets’ history with a staggering 9839 points. He is also the all-time leader in games played with 701 games in the franchise’s history. Today, Dell Curry works as a commentator for the Charlotte Hornets’ broadcasts.

The connection to Charlotte runs even deeper for Seth as he was born in the Queen City, unlike his older brother Steph Curry, who was born in Akron. (Side note: So was LeBron, guess Akron’s got that MVP soil). In 2008, Curry graduated from Charlotte Christian School and in 2013, from Duke University, where he was roommates with Austin Rivers, his future wife Callie’s brother.

In his 10-year NBA career, Seth Curry has been averaging a respectable 10.5 points per game (shooting 47.1% from the field, 43.2% from 3-point range, and 86.3% from the free-throw line) across 474 appearances (209 starts). Though in his third stint with the Mavs (previously in 2016-17 and 2019-20), he averaged only 4.3 points per game in the 36 games he played this season, in his previous two runs with the Dallas Mavericks, Curry was averaging 12.6 points with 43.9% 3-point shooting.

What does this move mean for both parties?

For the Mavs, trading Curry for P.J. Washington was a major strategic move to beef up their potential Championship team led by potential MVP Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Washington has been averaging 13.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game in the 44 games he’s played this season.

It may seem like a step down for Curry in a way that Dallas sits at a 8th place in the Western Conference while Charlotte is as low as 13th in the Eastern Conference but this is a chance for Seth to connect with his roots and harness that “Dell Curry energy” to chase some franchise records with the Hornets. So, Callie needn’t worry as this homecoming holds exciting possibilities for Seth’s future!
