The NBA just slapped the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Rudy Gobert with a $100,000 fine for “directing an inappropriate and unprofessional gesture toward a game official and publicly criticizing the officiating” during Friday night’s showdown with the Cleveland Cavaliers. However, this isn’t the first time such accusations have flown around the NBA, and Gilbert Arenas backs up Gobert’s claim.
Acknowledging that this is the 4th time Gobert has been fined for criticizing officiating, the Gilbert Arenas Crew questions if he has a point. Arenas replies, “Uh yeah I mean…there’s a big scandal of a “Referee” gambling on games and even though there was other people that he’s doing this to was in those calls and part of this whole scandal, I’m pretty sure that 100% of everybody who watches basketball thinks the same thing. The fact that the NBA keeps trying to protect the same one entity is ridiculous.” Here Gilbert is referring to referee Scott Foster.

Furthermore, Arenas discussed the factors surrounding ref Scott Foster, “Like I’m sorry, like you look stupid as an organization. The same one person who is showing his favoritism against Chris Paul don’t know if he’s betting in those games but we know when he goes against Chris Paul what the outcome’s going to be so the fact that you still have this entity in the NBA there’s 100% people believe he’s cheating.”
The Arenas Crew also pointed out that fines for criticizing officiating typically range from $10,000 to $30,000. Since this episode was being live streamed, a live poll was held and it showed that 94% of viewers voted that ref Scott Foster was guilty of the accusations.

In a similar incident, the drama started during a Celtics-Suns match-up. Early in the first quarter, Celtics star Jaylen Brown had a clear foul go uncalled. Brown’s frustration resulted in a technical foul, sparking outrage. While JB wasn’t given his due, his teammate Horford received a foul on Suns’ Kevin Durant, raising questions about potential double standards.
In another similar incident, tension flared during Hawks vs. Nets matchup. Trailing by a significant 17 points with only 4 minutes left in the game, the Hawks called a timeout. Referee Tony Brothers called out Dejounte Murray but Murray, presumably caught in the heat of the moment, looked away. Bam! Technical foul. The All-Star player received a technical for ignoring referee Tony Brothers!

In the final seconds of the Cavs game, Gobert was called for his 6th foul and ejected. As he left, he made the infamous “money gesture” towards Scott Foster. Scott Foster has long been a source of controversy. His past association with Tim Donaghy, an official involved in a major NBA gambling scandal, continues to cast a shadow. This “money gesture” isn’t exactly groundbreaking. Mavs superstar Luka Doncic made a similar gesture after a questionable non-call against the Golden State Warriors in March last year.

So, is the NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, listening to the fans and the experts? Time will tell. But one thing’s for sure, the league needs to address these “bad calls” concerns before fans start losing their faith. Share your thoughts in the comments below!
