The Former NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Tyson Chandler, was a guest on All The Smoke Podcast with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson. When Barnes asked Chandler about any fond memories from his 19-year-long NBA career, he brought up his first meeting with the Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker. “Phoenix, Young Book,” the 7-footer replied. Book was drafted 13th overall in the 2015 draft, and Tyson joined the Phoenix Suns the same year.
The Suns’ roster at the time was so mediocre that Chandler claims he did not even know who was on the team. He joined the Phoenix Suns to stay close to his mother, who was battling cancer. On his first day playing pick-up with the team, Chandler met the rookie Devin Booker. “He was able to pick up quick. Young players don’t work like that,” said the former NBA center about Booker’s work ethic and basketball IQ.
After the practice, Phoenix GM, Ryan McDonough asked Chandler what he thought about the roster. The veteran player recognized Booker’s Greatness and said, “Me. Them. This roster. He better than all of us.”
