It has been 23 years since billionaire Mark Cuban purchased the Dallas Mavericks franchise in 2000. Under Cuban’s ownership, the Mavericks have seen some of their greatest years. They won their maiden NBA title in 2011 under the leadership of Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki. And Cuban’s business acumen has helped the Mavericks stay title contenders to this day. But after 23 years of ups and downs, Mark Cuban is reportedly selling the majority stake in the Dallas Mavericks.

Mark Cuban is selling the Dallas Mavericks?

Mark Cuban is reportedly selling the majority stake in the Dallas Mavericks to Miriam Adelson from the casino tycoon Adelson family for a valuation in the vicinity of a whopping $3.5 billion. Cuban purchased a majority stake in the Mavericks franchise in 2000 for $285 million. That means the 65-year-old will make an astounding profit of around $3.2 billion in valuation if the rumors are true. Of course, the actual profit he makes depends on the stake he sells. The sale does not mean that Cuban will no longer be associated with the Mavericks.

Citing sources, Shams Charania of The Athletic said that even after the sale, Cuban will retain full control of basketball operations in a unique setup. That sounds like a dream scenario for the billionaire. Cuban makes an exponential profit on the sale and gets control of the operations without having to solely worry about the monetary side of it.

Mark Cuban turned the Dallas Mavericks franchise around

Mark Cuban has played a huge role in bringing the Dallas Mavericks to where it is today. Before Cuban took charge of the Mavericks in 2000, Dallas had been one of the worst teams in the league and had not been to the playoffs in a decade. Cuban’s fresh leadership style and access to the best industry resources led the Mavericks to their first playoffs the same year he arrived on the scene. Dallas has not looked back since. Cuban focused deeply on analytics and built a championship team that fit well rather than loading the team up with multiple superstars.

His decisions over the years saved the Mavs a lot of money while staying relevant in the league. Dallas has made it to the playoffs 18 times, been to two NBA Finals, and won 1 Championship under Cuban’s ownership. He is also considered one of the best owners in the league by the players, as he treats them extremely well. Dirk Nowitzki spent his entire career in Dallas and gets a hero’s welcome every time he returns to the Mavs arena. That is the culture Mark Cuban has helped build in Dallas.
