The simple and straightforward answer is No. It was in November 2023 that Erik Spoelstra and his wife of seven years, Nikki Sapp, said in a statement, “We have made the difficult yet amicable decision to jointly file to formally end our marriage.” And since then, there have been no rumors or reports about Coach Spo getting back to the dating scene.

Although the pair were only married for seven years, Spoelstra reportedly met when Nikki was 18 and employed by the Miami Heat organization as a dancer. However, it was only in 2013 that the media caught wind of a romance brewing between the Heat coach and its former dancer.

According to Larry Brown Sports, Erik attended a fundraiser sponsored by the Heat broadcasters Eric Reid and Tony Fiorentino, accompanied by Sapp. Two years later, Chris Bosh’s wife confirmed the sly hint Spoelstra dropped after calling into South Florida’s “Izzy and Ethan” show on 790 The Ticket.

Apparently, he confessed the “coolest thing” he did over the summer was pop the question. And Adrienne Bosh immediately took to X to congratulate the happy couple.

And just like that, Nikki and Erik, at 25 and 45, respectively, tied the knot. Interestingly, though, Spoelstra was allegedly in a brief engagement to Analia Romero, before news about his marriage to Sapp dropped. Unfortunately, there isn’t much information about this particular period of Spo’s life.

Who is Nikki Sapp?

Dancer, art director, and teacher, the 53-year-old’s now ex-partner is a multi-talented woman. Sapp is half-Puerto Rican and a Florida International University graduate with a bachelor’s degree in art history, which she completed in 2010 while cheerleading for the Miami Heat. After graduation, Nikki went on to work as the Director at Guy Hepner Contemporary Art Gallery in California.

Her career in the arts didn’t stop there, though. She also served as the Creative Art Director at Art Angels Gallery in Los Angeles. In addition to her work in the arts, Nikki dedicated five years to teaching Language Arts and dance at the Sports Leadership and Management Charter School in Little Havana, Miami. Today, she hosts a popular podcast, The Know with Nikki Spo, which she launched in 2021. Through her podcast, Sapp explores empowering topics and inspiring stories from women across various fields.

Erio Spoelstra and Nikki Sapp share three children – 2 boys and a girl – Santiago, Dante, and Ruby. However, in 2022, a tragedy befell the happy family. Their eldest boy had been diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, a form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, after undergoing an unexpected intestinal surgery the day after his fourth birthday.

In late July that year, Nikki took to Instagram penning a note of gratitude and relief, as Santiago’s cancer was in remission, “Yesterday, our big boy got to ring the bell in the cancer wing at Nicklaus, and the gratitude I feel is overwhelming. REMISSION.“

She also thanked the doctors and staff for their incredible support and help. Not to mention, her words also reflected her pride in her son for being so brave as “he endured (and thrived through) Chemotherapy.”

Anyway, it seems Spoelstra Jr. is doing well and healthy. So, kudos to the little guy for staying strong!

When Sapp and Spoelstra decided to peacefully part ways

As mentioned above, after seven years of marriage, Erik Spoelstra and Nikki Sapp decided to go their separate ways. But they were still determined to be the best parents they could be to their children. “We are both grateful for our relationship and remain fully committed to co-parenting our children and continuing to make them our shared priority,” the joint divorce statement said.

However, the reasons for their separation haven’t been made clear. Of course, many theories about the reasons circulated in the social media, but they were just that. The one thing, though, that is clear is the couple arrived at the decision amicably.

Their separation marks the end of a beautiful chapter, yet Erik Spoelstra and Nikki Sapp remain united as parents, fully committed to nurturing and prioritizing their children’s well-being. Through all the highs and lows, they’ve built a bond rooted in respect and shared values.
