In recent weeks, the Los Angeles Lakers haven’t been at their best. They have looked out of sorts and disjointed, which has led to a poor run of results. In their last 14 games, the Lakers have won only four games. However, the Lakers pulled off a somewhat surprising win over their city rivals, the Los Angeles Clippers. The game ended 106-103 in favor of the Lakers.

After the victory, Darvin Ham reiterated that he has the support of the Lakers hierarchy. He said, “I told you, man, I’m just thankful that I’ve got that support from Jeanie, with her always encouraging me, asking me ‘What do I need? Is everything great?’” According to the Athletics’ Sam Amick, Jeanie Buss and Ham share mutual respect for each other’s work. Buss even sent a lengthy message of support to Ham in the wake of growing speculation about Ham’s job security.

However, despite getting the support of Jeanie Buss, Ham’s job is hanging by a thread. He needs to promptly address the alarming slump the Lakers are currently witnessing. Their post-NBA Cup form has relegated them to the 10th spot in the Western Conference standings, with 18 victories and 19 defeats. Furthermore, reports have emerged of growing disconnect between the players and the coaching staff.

The Lakers’ supporters are becoming increasingly impatient, and should their current poor performance persist, it could be the tipping point. Ham is privy to the growing pressure. But, he has urged for patience and it looks like he’s going to get some time to turn their fortunes around. After all, he has earned some breathing room because of the NBA-Cup title.

Are the Lakers still title contenders?

At the moment, the Lakers’ lofty preseason ambitions of an NBA title look like a far-fetched dream. However, the Lakers have proven their title credentials, as evidenced by their In-Season tournament triumph. They won the NBA Cup in dominant fashion, winning all seven of their games. Their supporters are optimistic that their cherished team can rediscover that level of performance, and a win against the Clippers might serve as the catalyst to spark their season into life.

However, the Lakers have dug themselves into a hole and getting out of it could prove to be challenging at best. The Lakers severely lack depth and outside shooting. In fact, the Lakers have shot 35.2% from beyond the arc, which is the sixth worst mark in the league. The Lakers’ hierarchy must orchestrate a trade for a superstar. Players like Zach LaVine, Dejounte Murray and Pascal Siakam are rumored to be on the trade block. Given their current form, a deep postseason run looks unlikely. But, stranger things have happened in the NBA. Can the Lakers make it to the playoffs? Let us know in the comments below!
