As a businessman, Joe Lacob has left a significant stamp on the world. After holding high-profile positions in big firms, the business tycoon turned to sports. He began with the now-defunct American Basketball League, a women’s league which, despite its wealth of talent, failed to make a mark. Then he graced the gates of the NBA and this is where he really made his name known in the sporting world. He made the Golden State Warriors a champion franchise.
However, he wants to expand his horizons. Will we see him own another team soon?

Will Stephen Curry & The Warriors’ success be seen in MLB?
In 2016, Lacob generated a lot of buzz after claiming that the Warriors are “light years ahead of everyone else”. This quote came when the Warriors were 67-7 in a season where they won an NBA-record 73 games. Although they lost the Finals, they won three championships in the next seasons, which indeed puts them light years ahead of any other franchise. Under his ownership, the Warriors became the highest-revenue-generating club, bringing in around $765 million during the 2021/22 season.
This puts them $300 million over the Los Angeles Lakers. It is clear that they have been indeed light years ahead as a business model, too. The business phenom in tandem with former General Manager Bob Myers created an impressive market in the NBA. He is now willing to invest in another squad based in Oakland. It is the MLB franchise Oakland Athletics, which is in huge turmoil.

Owned by John Fisher, who has come under the radar for shifting A’s to Las Vegas. The team hasn’t made any deep imprints for a long time. The Nevada counselors have approved the move by signing a $380 million for a retractable roof. Meanwhile, MBL Commissioner Rob Manfred has given his seal of approval, too. Lacob, who is worth $1.5 billion, has expressed his interest in owning the club. He has a much better reputation than Fisher. Since last year, A’s fans have raised the chants of “Sell The Team” directing their ire towards him. However, he has been unwilling to do away with the squad.
Speaking to Bay Area Owners Group on the issue, the Warriors owner had the following to say, ”He owns the team, he’s not interested in selling, and I guess it looks like they’re moving to Las Vegas right now. Let’s see how that shakes out. We always look at everything. We’re always aggressive and should there be an opportunity to own a Major League Baseball team… we’d be interested. But at this point, I can really. There’s nothing to say about it because I don’t know anything about it.”
Warriors have a lot of bills to pay
With championships comes a lot of price. To keep high-caliber players happy means diving head-first into the luxury tax. They recently paid Green a contract worth $25 million per year. Stephen Curry is earning over $50 million a month. Klay Thompson is earning close to $40 million a year and is in his last year. Andrew Wiggins is making over $25 million a year. As a result, the team is going to pay around $380 million in bills, including both the payroll and luxury bill. The vociferous owner has spoken against the luxury system last year and also got fined because of it.
