When talking about the legacy of LeBron James, there are quite a number of scenarios that pop into mind. For many, it would be the records he’s broken and created. It’s not surprising, really, given that his entire NBA career has been devoted to chasing the GOAT status. Meanwhile, others will be looking at his off-court achievements, in awe of how equally successful he is off the hardwood. And for his mama, Gloria James, it’s all about giving back to the community.

From ‘I Promise,’ an initiative funded by the LeBron James Family Foundation to using his voice and influence for topics that need to be addressed, the 39-year-old has never forgotten his roots. Talking to ABC News’ DeMarco Morgan, Mama Glo iterated the same. “The works that he’s done off the court for the community… that’s going to be lifelong.”

The contributions he’s made to his hometown are in no way insignificant. In 2004, when the LBJ Family Foundation started out, they provided bikes and backpacks. From there, the foundation only saw growth. Much like how LeBron received help, financially and otherwise, they started after-school programs, then a public school, and a wide variety of services that help the students and parents. The ‘I Promise’ has branched out to the IP Institute, Village, and Program.

The primary focus of the James family continues to be the development of their community, and it starts with the children. With that in mind, they have also provided rent-free housing, alongside affordable housing to those who are slightly better off. The ‘kid from Akron’ only knows too well the importance of a stable home.

But another thing that keeps beckoning him is the GOAT status.

LeBron James and the GOAT debate

It has been a topic of discussion ever since ‘The King’ proved that he was worth the hype of being the “generational talent” and the “Chosen One”. Until LeBron entered the NBA, there was only one GOAT – Michael “His Airness” Jordan. Of course, legends like Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Kobe Bryant were brought into the lot, but none of them came close to MJ.

And suddenly, the whole atmosphere changed and the focus shifted to a young boy from Akron. When LeBron James came into the league, he was already in contention with Jordan for the GOAT status. In his first-ever regular season game, LeBron posted 25 points, most by a prep-to-pro player. He then went on to win the Rookie of the Year Award, the first for a Cavalier. From there, it was easy to build a resume worthy of the same. That is not to say the road was easy.

From choking in the NBA Finals, being unable to remain clutch at crucial moments, and controversial decisions, to being 4-6 in the Finals all are main factors thrown for him not achieving a consensus status in the GOAT debate. But no one can contest that the man has achieved innumerable achievements, reached incredible milestones, and even added a few of his own. Suffice it to say that LeBron James is still on for the GOAT status.
