Victor Wembanyama finally made his NBA debut on Wednesday against the Dallas Mavericks. And we think it is one he would probably like to forget. Not because he didn’t play well, though. The 19 year old showed immense potential despite the foul trouble.

The Spurs were just not good enough to take on the extremely strong Dallas. Led by Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, the team put up a strong 126 point victory against the Spurs’ 119. Since this is just the first game for Victor, his efforts cannot be completely dismissed.

However, another rookie had probably the best start for his career. Dereck Lively II, the 12th overall pick from the 2023 NBA draft, was first selected by Oklahoma City Thunder. He was then traded to the Mavericks.

An amazing play from Lively

In the post game talk to the media, Luka was praising the performance of the new-joinee. Lively put up 16 points, 10 rebounds, one block and one steal. The 24-year old was so impressed by the rookie that he dropped the f-bomb to explain his game. He said, “He didn’t seem like nervous. He played f*cking ama—”

The guard immediately stopped himself and apologized for his mistake. The crew laughed, quipping that he still needed time to get back into work mode after the break! This fumble aside, Luka also had an impressive performance. The Slovenian guard had 33 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. He was supported by the Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving who added 22 points and Grant Williams with 27 points.

How well did Victor play?

Wembanyama is the most anticipated player to debut since Lebron James. And he did well scoring 15 points, five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal. His performance was a bit slow because of the five fouls he picked. This led to his restricted time of just 23 minutes. Still, it is evident that he has the skillset and potential to reach higher.

With just his debut, Victor has managed to capture the attention of the NBA world. Even Doncic acknowledged this saying “ “We knew the whole building was going to be loud. He’s probably one of the best prospects to enter the NBA. It was fun.” Victor assessed his play as something that is bound to grow, adding, “It was a lot of emotion. It would have been perfect to win. Tonight really marks the beginning.”
