As the Los Angeles Lakers gear up for what could be LeBron James’ swan-song season in 2025-26, offseason transformations are buzzing with potential to redefine the roster. Luka Doncic’s sleeker frame has stolen the spotlight, but whispers of bulked-up teammates hint at a deeper strategy to dominate the paint and push for a title. On his YouTube podcast, Lakers reporter Jovan Buha observed that several players looked noticeably different at Media Day. Buha revealed the specific news about Jaxson Hayes’ transformation, stating, “Jaxson said he gained 20 pounds, which I thought like that one I I couldn’t tell as much with him in terms of like I don’t think he visibly looked 20 pounds heavier, but he did look a little bit heavier”. He emphasized the basketball reasons behind the gain, adding, “I think that will help with post defense and rebounding, and we’ll see if it affects his athleticism at all”.

The 20-pound gain, achieved through calorie tracking and nutrient-focused meals, addressed long-standing critiques of Hayes’ slender 220-pound frame at 7 feet tall, which had limited his rebounding and interior defense in prior seasons. In 2024-25, the results were tangible: Hayes started 35 games after Anthony Davis’ trade to Dallas, averaging 6.8 points on a career-high 72.2% shooting, 4.8 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks in 19.5 minutes, his best efficiency yet, bolstering the Lakers’ paint presence during a 50-win campaign.

Hayes’ added bulk should help him hold his own in the paint defensively and on the glass, while Reaves’ increased strength aims to help him better handle physical defenders and maintain efficiency. With training camp underway, these transformations could be key factors as the Lakers integrate their new pieces and aim for a deep playoff run.

Similarly, Austin Reaves bulked up by an estimated 5-10 pounds of muscle, entering his contract year stronger to counter physical defenses that exposed him in prior playoffs.
JJ Redick on the Austin Reaves transformation
Head coach JJ Redick has been thoroughly impressed with Austin Reaves’ offseason commitment. During his pre-season press conference, Redick didn’t hold back his praise, stating, “Every day that he’s been in the gym, he’s been the best player in the gym”. He specifically highlighted the physical results of Reaves’ hard work, noting, “His body is really good right now. He’s really strong. His burst, his athleticism. It’s evident that he spent a lot of time working on his body this summer”.

This transformation comes at a crucial time for Reaves, who is entering the final year of his contract after a career-best season. He averaged 20.2 points, 5.8 assists, and 4.5 rebounds last year, but the playoffs exposed some limitations against physical defenses. His improved strength and athleticism are expected to help him combat that and thrive as a primary ball-handler alongside Luka Doncic and LeBron James.

Redick’s comments suggest Reaves is poised for an even larger role this season. The coach also mentioned that Reaves has been a constant topic of praise among the staff for his offseason dominance in workouts. With his body in peak condition and his confidence high, Reaves is positioning himself as a vital X-factor for the Lakers’ championship aspirations.
