Luka Doncic Urged to Take it “Personal” After Spencer Dinwiddie’s “Mama” Taunt at Ex-Team

Spencer Dinwiddie finally got his wish of playing for his home team. But that wasn’t enough for the 30-year-old. He was a primary target of the Dallas Mavericks as well. Having played seamlessly alongside Luka Doncic, the Mavs were hoping to get him for a title run this season.
But his decision was to go with the Purple & Gold. Spencer even offered an example to clarify his choice. Dinwiddie asks the viewers to imagine themselves as a kid who got bullied. Now Dallas would be like a mother. She would coddle you, comfort you, saying everything is going to be alright. Los Angeles, though, is like the father. There wouldn’t be any pity or comfort from him. He would push you to “go out there and fight till you get a win”.
Gil’s crew couldn’t make head or tail of Spencer’s well-thought-out analogy. Although Gilbert himself seems to understand where Dinwiddie comes from, the rest of his hosts don’t take too kindly to how he presented the Mavericks. Rashad McCants even pretends to be Luka Doncic as he says, “Luka’s in the back like, ‘I took that sh*t personal’.”

As McCants made that comment, Gil speaks up on behalf of Dinwiddie. Arenas does not believe that the 6’5 guard was taking a jab at the franchise itself. All he meant was that the Lakers jersey in itself demands a certain level of competence and expectation that you wouldn’t get from a Dallas jersey.
“When you think of any small market team, there’s no pressure on you as a player,” Arenas reasons. And he already got Rashad shaking his head in obvious denial. He immediately counters Gil’s feeble attempt with a practical way Spencer could have gone about the whole thing. Dinwiddie could have said that during his time with the Mavericks, this is how they handled different situations.

But right now, he would rather use his skills and talent in a team that needs whatever extra juice they can get. And also because he is an “LA kid”. Had Spencer Dinwiddie gone about his explanation this way, it would have made more sense, at least according to Rashad McCants. But the man in question wasn’t done by a long shot.

Spencer Dinwiddie credits James for being a key aspect of his decision
When the Lakers came with an offer, Dinwiddie just didn’t have it in him to turn it down. He even credited LeBron James for being a key factor in making his decision. One can imagine the hilarious chaos that caused. Funny enough, as McCants had pointed out, Spencer has no prior experience playing with the Lakers.
But he does know a few familiar faces. Namely, Christian Wood with the Mavs, D’Angelo Russell, and Taurean Prince during Spencer’s time with the Nets, and Rui Hachimura with the Wizards. While he did acknowledge “C-Wood” in his short speech, it left the viewers wondering whether it was a compliment.

Anyway, the Lakers are now on the receiving end of Dinwiddie’s services. Hopefully, he can make his “Dad” proud by getting the win!
