Will Hardy, the head coach of the Utah Jazz, had no sympathy when he talked about the team’s performance. Post-game saw him go unfiltered when talking about the 50-point loss to the Mavericks. Third time in the franchise’s history to record a 50-point plus loss, disappointment would be too mild a word. The first loss happened when they were still located in New Orleans (March 14, 1979) and lost to the Bucks by 56  points.

The second instance was more recent, in 2018. This failure was also against Dallas on November 18th. Once again, with a 50-point deficit.

Talking to reporters after the game, Hardy did not bother to conceal his displeasure. He had some strong words to say, “That was an absolutely horrendous performance from start to finish. That was a masterpiece of dogs**t!”

Not ideal, of course. But it just goes to show how much of a letdown yesterday’s game was. And obviously, not just for the fans. The loss also marked the Jazz’s 14th loss this season, putting them at 7-14 this season. Their Western Conference standing is 12th. Explaining further, the Virginia-born coach believed their offense had been steady initially. The turnovers along with 3-pointers had sealed their fate early on. The Mavericks made 29 points on Utah Jazz’s turnovers alone. Dallas’ 22 three-pointers were more or less the final punch to the gut.

Hardy sheds light on their “horrendous” loss

According to Hardy, poor defense was the major reason that led to their early demise. And as mentioned above, the turnovers circled back to haunt the ‘Beehive State’. The tip-off had seen the players doing everything right, shooting from the corners. But once the Mavs started rolling, there was no stopping them.

The number of shots they got in during the first half pressured ‘Salt Lake City’ to match the intensity. This ended with Utah committing 19 turnovers in total. With the formidable offense that the Doncic-Irving duo poses, these mistakes will cost them dearly. This was seen when Luka scored his triple-double in the first half itself (40-11-10).

Hardy was deflated when he admitted that “[He] hasn’t been disappointed in our team very often this year.” The Jazz was a done deal before the game even got to halftime. They face the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night. The Clippers are 10-10 standing in the 9th position in the Western Conference.

One take at a time

“Not only is there more to life than basketball, there’s a lot more to basketball than basketball” - Jackson had a simple philosophy when he was coaching the Lakers. He wanted everyone to succeed and grow in the service of something bigger than themselves. This is what struck me the most.
