While leading his Team East to a record-breaking victory over Team West at the All-Star Game (211-186), Giannis Antetokounmpo stole the hearts of many beyond the court. During the pre-game conference, he shared a hilarious anecdote that went viral – a story about buying his first “Giannis” jersey on a trip to discover his Nigerian roots.

The two-time MVP began telling a “crazy story” which goes back to the streets of Lagos when Giannis visited Nigeria with his mum in August 2023.

The Greek Freak was exploring the streets of Lagos while trying to buy a “Giannis” jersey. He told his mum, “If I see my jersey, I’m going to stop and I’m going to buy it. I don’t care if people mob me I don’t care I want the jersey because I’ve never bought “my” jersey before.”

True to his word, Giannis stopped despite the crowds forming around him and said, “I went to the guy. I used to sell stuff also, so I bargained. He told me it was like $5 so I was like $2.5. He said no, 5, I’m like $3.5. He had no idea who I was but then I gave $5 and said I want that Giannis jersey and he was like yeah, he gave it to me and turned his back around.

While attending the final of the Youth Alive Basketball Championship camp at Rowe Park Sports Centre in Lagos, Giannis Antetokounmpo not only met with young players but also participated in other mentorship programs to inspire them but the highlight for some would remain the bargaining story that Giannis shared in the pre-game conference.

From selling CDs to cementing his legacy

Even in the conference, millionaire Giannis Antetokounmpo mentions how he also “used to sell stuff“. But this seemingly simple statement belies the full extent of his experience. Before becoming the Milwaukee Bucks superstar, he hustled by selling various items – clothing, food, DVDs, CDs, and more. The Greek Freak saw it all before cementing his name in the NBA history books.
