NBA players are removed after getting their second technical foul in a game and officials administer technical fouls to players, coaches, or other team staff for behavior judged unsportsmanlike. While a player might be thrown out for a single unsportsmanlike act if it is considered serious enough, technical fouls are normally handed out without prior warning, according to the official NBA rulebook.
However, Jayson Tatum’s concept reveals a potential vulnerability in the system. Players may react emotionally to calls they feel are incorrect only to be justified on review. In these cases, Tatum claims that the technical foul should be reversed since the player’s behavior was appropriate.
Jayson Tatum asked for the one change he would make to the NBA: “If you get a tech for overreacting to a call and you were right…that tech should be rescinded. You should get your money back.”

So, the Boston Celtics star is calling for a reform to the NBA’s technical foul system, arguing that if a player earns a technical foul for overreacting to a mistake and is later proven right, the technical penalty should be overturned and the player’s money shall be refunded.
This idea of the 5x All-Star indicates a desire for fair and accurate officiating and with this, the NBA might prevent players from being unfairly penalized for expressing their frustration with decisions by allowing technical fouls to be overturned in circumstances where the player’s reaction was justified. However, not only Tatum but many players and coaches have raised concerns regarding the judgments of the officials this season.

Have the officials been so inaccurate this season?
The NBA is under criticism for its refereeing this season, with coaches and players criticizing the officials. Tyronn Lue, the Los Angeles Clippers coach, was recently fined $35,000 for insulting referees after being removed from a game. Other coaches, including Toronto Raptors’ Darko Rajaković and Sacramento Kings’ Mike Brown, have expressed discontent with officiating.

Monty McCutchen, the NBA’s Senior Vice President of Referee Development and Training, acknowledged the increased scrutiny but is standing behind the officials’ performance. He emphasizes that mistakes have reduced this season, as have the free throw attempts and fouls. So, McCutchen argues that referees have to differentiate between legitimate criticism as opposed to a perception or story.

Overall, McCutchen underlines that officials exist to help the game, and even though there might be some room for improvement he believes the officials have kept up with the game’s progress and maintained fairness in their rulings.
