Bam Adebayo, the Miami Heat star, could be under a major financial crisis because of the NBA’s new rule. The 26-year-old center has been one of the best performers for the Magic City and is carrying his team in the absence of Jimmy Butler. Not only has he been offensively strong, but he is aiding his team defensively averaging a double-double per game.

However, because of the Player Participation Policy passed by the NBA in early October, even after performing exceptionally well, Bam Adebayo might incur a monetary loss because of the games he missed. He has been averaging 21.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. However, he has missed 10 games up till now. Adebayo signed a five-year $163,000,300 contract in 2020 and he is eligible for an extension later this year. However, it all depends on whether he makes it through the All-NBA voting, which is affected by the number of games played.

The new policy of the league states that if a player cannot play at least 65 games, that player will be ineligible for all the major individual awards of the NBA like Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year, All-NBA honors, etc. This policy was passed so players do not take unnecessary days off and rest without any good reason. NBA’s Executive Vice President Evan Wasch even stated that “there’s significant business impact and fan impact” when the players do not show up at matches.

Taking into account the games he has missed, Adebayo must ensure that he stays healthy and plays most of the upcoming games. If he makes it to the All-NBA, he has a chance to receive a four-year contract worth $245 million but if he does not, then he will only be able to sign a three-year extension worth $152 million with the Miami Heat. This may seem unfair, considering the physical toll that basketball has on a player. But it seems like the 26-year-old has not let it bother him.

What does Adebayo think about this new policy?

Looking at this new policy, Bam Adebayo did not seem to worry at all. He confidently claimed that this new policy does not affect his game or his mindset toward the sport of basketball. However, he said, “I think it’s crazy that we have to have a rule that you have to play games, just because in my mind, I feel like everybody loves basketball the way I do. At the end of the day, if guys want to win awards, they’re gonna play.”
