A month after the blockbuster trade of Chris Paul and Jordan Poole, the Golden State Warriors front office is in the headlines again. But this time, it is for a coaching change. Warriors announced that they will be promoting Nick Kerr, the son of Warriors’ current head coach Steve Kerr, to become the new head coach of their G League team, the Santa Cruz Warriors.

Although this is a huge achievement for the 30-year-old, the Warriors are facing some heat because of this announcement.

Nick Kerr’s long path to a head coaching job

Nick Kerr has been a part of the NBA longer than many people know. Steve Kerr’s son started his NBA journey as an assistant in the Spurs’ video room in 2017 under the guidance of Greg Popovich. After that, he spent three seasons doing the same work for the Warriors under his father’s wing. Nick then started his coaching journey and moved on to an assistant coaching job for the Warriors G League team.

After serving two years as an assistant coach, he is all set to follow in his legendary father’s footsteps and take the reins of the Santa Cruz Warriors. Nick Kerr will replace Seth Cooper for the head coaching job as Seth will now co-pilot the main roster’s player development program.

Nick might not be a 5-time NBA champion like his father, but he has some playing experience as well. In college, he played three seasons for the San Diego Toreros, followed by one season for the California Golden Bears. Kerr played only 7 games for the Bears and averaged 1.3 points, as his team finished with a 23-11 record.

Announcement leads fans to accuse Warriors of Nepotism

Even after Nick’s lengthy resume, many fans on Twitter accused the Warriors of nepotism and believe that he got the head coaching job only because of his father’s accomplishments with the team. Steve Kerr joined the Warriors as head coach in 2014 and helped Stephen Curry and Co. win 4 championships and become one of the greatest dynasties in NBA history.
