Haliburton made headlines with an outstanding display during the 2022-23 season, gaining his first-ever All-Star participation. However, the player found an unusual inspiration in the virtual world of the popular video game, ‘NBA 2K’. Haliburton has an individual style of playing that combines accurate scoring along with excellent passing. These attributes have improved his basketball IQ and game sense, which he learned from the famous video game.

In an honest admission with the Ringer, Haliburton stated, “Honestly, a lot of my hoop knowledge in knowing how to play comes from video games. When you’re playing 2K and you’re on that camera angle where you can see everything ahead of you, that’s how I think sometimes”. This unconventional methodology for improving his skills has clearly impacted his on-court achievements.

Although many people think of video gaming as a form of entertainment, Haliburton’s path contradicts that notion. Instead of it being a distraction for him, it is a tool for learning as he implements those video game learnings in his sport and manages to achieve success. Although this is not a conventional form of training, Haliburton is learning a unique viewpoint that the normal practice drills might not teach him. However, has the 2023 All-Star managed to put this unconventional information to good use?
