The Detroit Pistons are having one of their worst seasons in franchise history. They are among the bottom two teams in the Eastern Conference standings with an abysmal 12-56 record. Amid their struggles, the Pistons have received more heartbreaking news that will negatively impact the rest of their season.

Detroit’s star rookie Ausar Thompson and 22-year-old Center Isaiah Stewart have been ruled out for the remainder of the season. According to NBA Insider Shams Charania, Ausar’s 2023-24 campaign has ended because he is suffering from a blood clot and receiving treatment. Ausar has missed 5 straight games due to the injury. He last suited up for the Pistons on March 9 against the Dallas Mavericks but left the game due to an illness after playing only 11 minutes. Ausar played 63 games in his rookie season, averaging 8.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.1 steals.

Meanwhile, Isaiah Stewart is dealing with a right hamstring strain that he suffered during Monday’s game against the Boston Celtics. He will also miss the rest of the season due to the injury. Stewart played 46 games this season, averaging 10.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists.

Ausar has been cleared to resume conditioning and will begin non-contact basketball activities at the end of the regular season. He is expected to return fully healthy next season. With only 14 games remaining in the 2023-24 regular season and no hope to make the playoffs, there is no point rushing the recovery of the two stars.

What’s next for the Detroit Pistons?

The Pistons would love to erase the 2023-24 season from their memory. They started the season by getting in the history books for all the wrong reasons. Cade Cunningham and Co. went on a 28-game losing streak early in the season, tying the Philadelphia 76ers for the longest losing streak in NBA history. And things did not get any better as the season progressed. The Pistons have only won only 12 games so far and have become one of the worst teams in the league. Despite their abysmal season, there are a few things they can be hopeful about for next season.

Cade Cunningham has played like a superstar all season and showed the potential of becoming the Pistons’ future franchise player. Their young stars, Ausar Thompson, Jaden Ivey, and Isaiah Stewart, also had a decent season, and the Pistons can build on their talent. Detroit’s head coach, Monty Williams, is a former Coach of The Year and should be able to figure out how to make the Pistons better next season.
