In the early stages of the 2023-24 NBA season, Tyrese Maxey has emerged as a standout player for the Philadelphia 76ers, stepping up amid Harden’s trade. Maxey’s performance suggests he’s more than a supporting player and has the potential to be an All-Star.

Daryl Morey’s decision to delay Maxey’s contract extension was strategic, allowing the Sixers to retain control and maximize cap space. While this strategy poses some risk, Maxey’s impressive start to the season adds a layer of uncertainty for Philadelphia, creating an intriguing dynamic for the team’s future.

The Sixers are set to offer him a qualifying offer of $8,486,620, reflecting his starter criteria. However, Maxey, destined for free agency, won’t sign the qualifying offer. His cap hold will be $13,031,760, influencing  76ers offseason decisions. Before the season, projections suggested Maxey would sign a five-year, 25% of the cap maximum extension. This deal remains plausible post-Daryl Morey’s cap space strategy.

If he re-signs with the 76ers on this contract, it could amount to $205,900,000 over five years. While this projection aligns with the initial estimate, Maxey’s outstanding performance raises the possibility of a more lucrative deal if he sustains his impressive form.

What will Maxey’s future be?

Tyrese Maxey is all set for a substantial payday this summer, either securing a 25% or 30% of the cap maximum contract. Remarkably, he could become the first player to qualify for a Designated Player deal when transitioning from the rookie scale without signing an extension. Whether he re-signs with the Philadelphia 76ers for a projected $35.5 million or $42.6 million first-year salary depends on the team’s willingness to delve deep into the luxury tax.

Regardless of their cap space strategy, Maxey is set for a max deal, solidifying the Sixers as a potent contender for years, bridging the transition from Joel Embiid to Maxey’s leadership. Do you think Maxey will become an MVP someday?
