With Stephen Curry entering what can be called the last leg of his Hall of Fame-worthy career, his only retirement plan is to make a positive change. And if politics can help him achieve that, “maybe” he’ll even consider running for president.

While promoting his second children’s book, I Am Extraordinary, Curry was asked whether he would be open to a career in politics, more specifically the presidency, post-retirement. “Maybe, I have an interest in leveraging every part of my influence for good in the way that I can, so if that’s the way to do it, then—I’m not going to say the presidency—but if politics is the way that you can create meaningful change … [I’m not ruling it out.]” said the Golden State Warriors guard. However, before he ventures down that path, does he meet the criteria for becoming president…set by his daughter Riley?

According to Riley, the perfect candidate to lead the nation must possess two key characteristics. “A very kind personality…and would like to see them take care of the earth and people,” said the 11-year-old during an interview with CNN in 2020.

Luckily for Steph, he fits the bill on both counts.

Steph never misses an opportunity to make a difference in his community. Even though the Warriors moved to the Bay Area, Curry gives back to the Oakland community through the Eat.Learn.Play Foundation, which he co-founded with his wife Ayesha in 2019. The charity aims to help kids in Oakland, California have access to free nutritious meals, quality education, and safe play spaces, which the couple believes is every child’s birthright. They are also a spokes family for No Kid Hungry, an organization that ensures the kids in Oakland eat three healthy meals every day.

Based on standardized test scores from 2021 and 2022, just 36% of third-graders in Oakland, California were reading at the appropriate grade level. Therefore, in pursuit of changing those alarming statistics, his foundation has invested almost $6 million in literacy efforts within the Oakland and Greater Bay areas. For his part, he also ensures that he can reach countless others through his words and help them build confidence. He authored two children’s books to help inspire young readers and reinforce the idea that everything can be achieved through hard work and dedication.

The 4x NBA Champion has also been a vocal advocate for social issues that are important to him. Back in 2020, he participated in Black Lives Matter protests in Oakland and Palo Alto. He even brought along his then-7-year-old daughter, Riley, who participated alongside her classmates. However, while it’s unclear whether he’ll run for the presidency, maybe a local government route could also help him make the change he envisions. But even that prospect seems to be on hold for now since Curry does not think he’s “anywhere close” to retirement just yet.
