Steve Kerr has a new deal on his hand, proving him worthy of being the real architect of the dynasty the Warriors have become over the past decade. Per Adrian Wojnarowski, the GSW Head Coach has reportedly agreed to a 2-year, $35 million contract extension, keeping him at the helm of the team through the 2025-26 season. This extension is also going to make him the highest-paid coach in the league’s history.

When asked to comment on the deal, shortly after the Warriors defeated the Hornets 97-84, Kerr declined to comment, offering a reasonable explanation. “Nothing has been signed, so Raymond has asked me to hold off on commenting on anything until an actual contract is signed,” Kerr said, mentioning Raymond Ridder, the team’s senior VP of communications. Kerr couldn’t help but smile when talking about this. His smile turned into a wider grin while responding to further questions.

Some interesting facts about the contract extension:

  • By earning $17.5 million every season, Kerr is going to get a higher salary than five of the Warriors’ players in the current season.
  • His contract will now run out at the same time as Stephen Curry’s in 2026.

It looks like the Warriors will be continuing on their championship-winning desire. After all, this is Kerr’s 10th year coaching the team, during which the Dubs claimed 4 championships in 8 years. It is not just a contract, but an investment—and the Dub nation understands its importance for the future of the Warriors dynasty to rule further. Putting to rest all the “Last Dance” tittle-tattle, loyalty continues to be one of the franchise’s standout qualities.

Joe Lacob and others are “invested” in Steve Kerr

Franchise CEO Joe Lacob and GM Mike Dunleavy took the lead to make Kerr’s continuity a possibility. Coach Kerr was hired after Mark Jackson’s controversial dismissal despite a top-notch 51-31 2013-14 campaign. And the former Chicago Bulls guard couldn’t have asked for a better first year as he led the Warriors to their first championship in 4 decades. Kerr’s continuity is serving well even this season.

It is also silencing murmurs about the leaders of the franchise getting frustrated by paying a hefty amount to get mediocrity in return. Kerr has constantly stood by the franchise. From the first half of this season, which was the most tumultuous time for the Warriors in the past decade, to Green’s constant aggression on-court leading to his (then) indefinite suspension, an inconsistent Klay Thompson being benched for the first time in 12 years, an effective search for lineups and rotations, Kerr has always remained optimistic about his team. It is probably his optimism that has helped the team remain in the playoff hunt.

Despite the highs and lows, there’s one thing that Kerr has been sure about – willingness to continue coaching beyond the 2023-24 season. This contract extension is proof enough to evade all doubts fans and analysts had about the Warriors’ luster fading out. With the team’s current rank – 10th in the Western Conference and their record 28-26, there is still hope for the Warriors’ legacy, coached under the careful hands and analytics of Steve Kerr, that they will continue to shine.

Ringmaster and the Circus

In 2015, Sports Illustrated published an article calling Steve Kerr the ringmaster of the Warriors circus. Their win at the time came from a sideshow of tough times, a ‘bazaar’ of passion, and a carousel of zeal. This also seems to be the pattern we are seeing right now.

Over the past 10 games, the franchise has gone 8-2, second in the entire league. No matter how tumultuous the first half of the season was, it seems like, under Kerr’s patient approach, they have finally found their routine. No matter how slowly, we are close to witnessing a team that was last seen in 2022 when they won their last championship. This time around, the only thing that has changed is the added talent, which may as well add a 5th ring to their dynasty this year.

Stephen Curry is outperforming almost everyone around him, post his news of not making it to the All-Star starting lineup. He has almost doubled the number of his shots and 3-pointers. If he continues playing this way, the Warriors are in it for the win. In fact, Jonathan Kuminga, one of the highest jumpers in the NBA, is rising the ranks too. His lethal scoring side with his built and dominance on the court is fixing what was leading the Warriors to a downfall earlier.

And what’s a long article about the Warriors without mentioning Draymond Green‘s performance, right? Well, Green has been a special case in the first half of this season. He has struggled big time to stay on the floor because of constant suspensions. His absence left a big gaping hole, making the team’s defensive ratings fall. Now, with his aggression out of the picture, and him back on the court, we see a rather cooler, calmer Green who (for the first time in some time) was not the reason a brawl took place on the court at the Chase Center post Hornets vs. Warriors. Safe to say, without his defensive strategy and gameplay, the Warriors would be a lost cause.

Coach Kerr? Well, of course, he plays a big role in all of this. His commitment to staying closer to the team, as the Warriors are inching closer to the last legs of their dynasty, displays his trust in each of them, despite their flaws. Earlier this season, this is what Kerr said, “I coach an unbelievable group of guys.” Further adding, “I’m not here just for winning championships, I’m here because I love my job. I’m here because I love my players and coaches and love working for the Warriors. So why would I leave?”

It is under his vision that the Warriors are looking ahead to the future. The Warriors are getting their breather with Kerr staying put for some more years. He is the ringmaster, about whom people joke about getting all the credit for just moving around a rope or his fingers. After all, we only see the players performing all the action, right? Well, as fans, we all can be a little oblivious to the facts about what goes on BEFORE the show to make the “show” possible.

As a ringmaster for the Warriors, Kerr isn’t just there to tell Curry, Thompson, or even Green what to do on the court, but he is there to take ownership, accountability, and responsibility beyond the court. He facilitates practice and keeps a check on their strengths and weaknesses, including their mental health. He trains them. He builds their chemistry. Much of what we see on the hardwood floor is in making of what Steve Kerr does outside the court. So, if the Warriors do bring home the Larry O’Brien trophy this year, don’t be surprised.
