Nostalgia knows no boundaries. For celebrity couple, Ayesha and Stephen Curry too it is the same, and memories have left lasting impressions on them. So, when Ayesha Curry, actress, philanthropist, and wife of Golden State Warriors’ legend Stephen Curry, was recently hit with pangs of nostalgia, it was relatable.

In an Instagram story, she shared a post with memoirs of what defined the early 2000s, like an NSYNC poster, tape recorder, a lava lamp, and other popular items from that time, and got nostalgic. She wrote a caption under that photo saying, “Geez, geez, geez!!! Take me back! Wow!”

Ayesha Curry, one of five children to Carol and John Alexander, comes from a diverse ethnic background. With a Jamaican-Chinese mother and an African-American and Polish father, Ayesha was in a mix wherein she had four different backgrounds to identify with. In an interview with The View in 2019, she confessed to having gone through an identity crisis as she stated, “Growing up in Toronto, I was black. I’m a black woman. I moved to the south, to North Carolina, right at the start of high school, so at 14, and there it was like…who do you choose?

Moving to North Carolina wasn’t easy. She even admitted to feeling that she had to choose a community. However, the one piece of advice from her mother that she took to heart was “Never lose yourself.” Ayesha has not looked back ever since and has led a very passionate life for herself. Touching base with her own past reality, this post is Ayesha’s way of remembering her childhood in her own way.

Fast forward to 2023, the Currys lead a lavish lifestyle. Ayesha, who is a famous Canadian-American actress, cookbook author, and television personality, is a force in her own right. Yet, the Currys are grounded in reality. The same element of nostalgia from her above Instagram post is evident in her philanthropic endeavors too. They are actively involved in humanitarian activities, such as education, childhood hunger, and social justice. And being global figures, they are using their popularity in a very effective way.

Philanthropy and nostalgia go hand in hand

As globally renowned celebrities the Currys could have focused on making a global impact with their outreach efforts too. However, they chose their native Oakland. Oakland is the place where both Ayesha and Stephen Curry started their family and have been living since 14 years. As Stephen Curry said in an interview with Town&Country magazine, “ This is a community that supports us,” and “This was where we wanted to plant our flag and where we want our goals to be realized.”

Therefore, it is no coincidence that their philanthropic foundation for children, Eat. Learn. Play, was started in Oakland in 2019. Be it giving out laptops to students, developing gymnasiums, or building digital classrooms, the Currys have been deeply invested in giving back to Oakland.

The Currys are transforming their neighborhood by committing $50 million to the Oakland Unified Public School District through their foundation, Eat. Learn. Play. Their three-pronged strategy meets critical requirements in the education system by concentrating on eating, learning, and playing. This generous gift seeks to give Oakland kids fresh, nutritional meals, increase reading rates, and encourage organized sports to improve students’ character, communication, and life skills.
