The San Antonio Spurs are currently locked in a fierce battle against the Dallas Mavericks. While Dallas strives to climb up from the 8th spot in the West, the Spurs are simply hungry for a victory. Luckily, they enter the game riding high on the momentum from Victor Wembanyama‘s historic performance. Wemby is undoubtedly the team’s standout player this season and has recently achieved a historic stat line: a triple-double with blocks. The game catapulted the youngster past several legends and secured his place on an exclusive list.

As he continues to captivate audiences and maintain his position atop the rookie ladder, Wembanyama has now notched another historic feat. Similar to his previous achievement, this one places him at the pinnacle within the realm of modern-day NBA centers as well.

Wembanyama was on the verge of achieving a 30-point double-double against the Mavericks. However, the Spurs were trailing heavily for the entire last stretch. Given that, he was benched, restricting him to just 27 minutes in the game. Regardless, Wembanyama, through his initial points in the game, becomes the quickest rookie to amass 1000 NBA points. In just his 49th game, he outperformed the likes of Zion Williamson, Luka Dončić, Joel Embiid, and Blake Griffin, all of whom reached the milestone in 50 games.

Although Wembanyama’s achievement may not be an astronomical milestone, it speaks volumes about his influence on the court. It’s worth noting that he took some time to adapt to the NBA’s style of play. Additionally, he’s part of one of the lowest-seeded rosters, and to avoid injuries and overexertion, the team has consistently placed him under minute restrictions.

Now, armed with this achievement, Wembanyama can embark on even more impressive on-court performances. Luka Doncic recently secured his place as the 6th fastest player in NBA history to reach 10,000 points, leading the active players’ list and surpassing LeBron James and Kevin Durant. If Wembanyama can follow suit, he has the potential to etch a lasting mark in the league in the years to come.

Does Wemby’s season stats solidify his ROTY status?

Even though the journey to consistently achieving 20-point games had its challenges, Wembanyama is currently maintaining an impressive average of 20.4 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. As he becomes more accustomed to the NBA ball and operates within a more cohesive squad, there’s potential for him to excel in assists as well, currently standing at 3.2 per game. However, while his stat line secures him a spot in an exclusive list, it doesn’t guarantee his status as the Rookie of the Year.

Despite gradually widening the gap on the ladder, historical data indicates that players with 20/10 stats have not always clinched the award. Among the 20 players with similar stats, 16 emerged victorious, but 4 lost the race despite being top contenders. Notable names on this list include Elvin Hayes, Alonzo Mourning, Clark Kellogg, and Hakeem Olajuwon.

With Wembanyama currently top of the ROTY voting ladder, Chet Holmgren’s impressive run with the Oklahoma City Thunder may jeopardize the Frenchman’s award. While Holmgren lags in individual stats, his team is 2nd in the Western Conference, and many believe it may be the team record that helps Holmgren pip Wemby to the award.
