July ends on a sorrowful note for the Curry family. Sonya Curry is grieving the passing of her mother and Stephen Curry’s grandmother, Candy Adams, in a heartbreaking post. Candy Wyms Adams had turned 76 this past May, around the same time as her youngest great-grandson, Cai’s first birthday. Clieve and Candy Adams’ daughter, Sonya, was very close to her mom, evident in her social media posts. Only a week ago, Sonya moved us with a powerful appeal to her followers after spending time with her mother.

Over a week since giving her mother company, Sonya broke the news of her mother’s passing. She penned a letter to her followers, which was about Candy Adams’ legacy and building the Curry family.

Heaven gained an angel, and we lost our heart,” Sonya wrote about her mom. “Today we say goodbye to our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. A woman who taught us to love fiercely, laugh often, and keep family at the center of everything. Her love lives on in every hug we give, every story we tell, and every lesson she left us with.”

She went on to describe her mother’s irreplaceable role in the family by quoting Luther Vandross’ historic statement in 1981. “As Luther said, ‘A house is not a home when there’s no one there to hold you tight.’ You were our home and now your love lives in all of us.

She ended it with a moving message to her mom: “Rest easy now, we’ll carry you with us, always. ❤️ I love you Mommy.”

Steph commented, “GG 🕊️” under his mother’s post, but is seemingly mourning quietly. Seth and Dell Curry are yet to respond, but Sydel summed up her emotions in one line: “We love you granny.🕊️” and filled her IG story with treasured memories of Candy Adams. Her sister-in-law, Callie, for her part, re-shared Sonya’s post in her story.

For us fans, too, Candy is a constant presence in Warriors games, and from her stories on Steph’s documentary, Underrated.

Stephen Curry’s Gran was the family’s fiercest protector

For the Curry clan, Candy Adams wasn’t just a grandmother; she was a pillar, a guiding light, and, as revealed in Underrated, his most ardent defender long before Draymond Green entered the picture. The Warriors superstar’s documentary revealed that Candy Adams took extreme offense to anyone claiming pre-fame Steph was too undersized to be a point guard.

It was just like a different time, you know, and he was so itty-bitty, and everyone was picking on him talking about he was too small to play,” Candy recalled in the documentary while going through an album of Steph’s younger pictures. “You remember when the man was up in the stands, and he was calling [Curry’s team] punks and stuff? I said, ‘Say one more thing and I’m going to bust you in your mouth.’ I was going to climb over that seat. I told him, ‘Don’t talk about my grandson. Don’t talk about my grandson.’ “

While Grandma got his back, The Chef went on to prove that size wasn’t a factor in revolutionizing the game. Candy was always a fighter. She personally revealed stories from when she was growing up in a Virginia town. Adams’ school was desegregated, but Black students weren’t always safe in schools. Despite her own mother’s attempts to keep her away from harm, Candy was not afraid to confront and fight bullies.

Adams didn’t just go to fight for her grandkids and daughter. She went to bat for the whole community, and Sonya had all the stories to back it.

Candy Adams spent the recent days in a hospital. Details of her condition weren’t revealed, but Sonya was always spending time with her. On July 17, after a visit to her mother, she had a message for her followers. “I challenge you to LOVE FIERCELY💕 Reach out to someone you care about and carve out intentional time just for them. Share something you both enjoy. Whether it’s an activity, a deep conversation, or simply sitting in silence together. Be present. Let your love be seen, heard, and felt #FierceLove #LoveFiercely.”

Sonya truly made the most of that precious time with her mother. Candy Adams’ ‘Fierce Love’ will be truly missed, but her enduring spirit will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of the Curry clan.
