Last night’s Lakers vs Blazers game was one of the best this season. Not only did LA crush Portland 134-110, but the matchup had a few entertaining moments. And they are still making their rounds on the internet. One of the viral moments was when LeBron James subbed himself out (because James = viral). The initial idea was that he had enough of Darvin Ham’s coaching, that he just assumed the role.

But James himself had ruled that explanation out. Defending his coach, the 4x champion, had come to Ham’s aid. But that didn’t sit well with fans of the King. While they appreciated his gesture, many fans were pleading not to pour water on what could be a potential farewell party for Ham.

If the above comment didn’t make things clear, this next Lakers fan put it as plainly as anyone possibly can.

While these two have politely asked LeBron to let go of Ham, there were a few others who called James out on the “bluff”. Take this hilarious screengrab of Chris Tucker from @V1N1JR, for example.

Yet another fan put a whole new spin on the tale by stating his unbidden wish while still managing to insult Ham.

And finally, if words or pictures alone aren’t enough to convey the emotion, this fan uses both as the ultimate way to get to a decision.

The fan hate against Coach Ham is nothing new. Since the Lakers’ struggles and trouble in the locker room surfaced, LA fans have been clamoring for Ham’s resignation. While the majority supports this, there are still a few who side with Ham. Aside from Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka, LeBron James would probably be the next big name who has shown his support for the Lakers’ coach.

Despite all the outside noise, it seems like Darvin Ham has chosen to trust his guys.

Ham still believes the Lakers’ core has what it takes to win

The win over the Blazers is one of the rare occurrences that have happened this season. Talking to reporters post-game, Ham displayed complete confidence in his squad.

When asked if the Lakers have enough to compete without a trade, his reply was, “Absolutely. He names a few aspects like injury and illnesses that have been stumbling blocks to the players unleashing their full potential. Ham also admits that the constant lineup changes make it “difficult to create a continuity”. The Lakers coach further elaborates on what can be done to continue tonight’s momentum.

“Play your part. Be supportive but also be a threat yourself. Be deliberate, be decisive so we can help give those guys [Davis and LeBron] the support they need.” There is no doubt that he’s referring to the recent surge in D’Angelo Russell‘s performance. With D’Lo being the top candidate to be traded, he’s been putting up crazy numbers of late.

If the team can indeed capitalize on the current rhythm, Ham’s assessment could come true. There is no doubt that the ‘Akron Hammer’ can give the team a 30 on any given day, but if the rest of the team is going to rely on James to pull the entire weight; that’s just not healthy nor practical.

One take at a time

“Not only is there more to life than basketball, there’s a lot more to basketball than basketball” - Jackson had a simple philosophy when he was coaching the Lakers. He wanted everyone to succeed and grow in the service of something bigger than themselves. This is what struck me the most.
