The Golden State Warriors seem to be turning to one of their G League players to help them out for the season. With Lester Quinones promoted to the main roster, they also have a spot vacant. And that is filled by Pat Spencer, a former lacrosse star. Spencer has spent the last two seasons with the Santa Cruz Warriors, averaging 15.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.0 assists while shooting 49.8% from the field and 43.1% from beyond the arc.

There is no doubt as to the fact that the 6’3 guard has had an interesting journey. From Pennsylvania to Hamburg and finally, San Francisco, Pat Spencer has traveled around the world to reach his destination. And the result, as Joe Pampiliano tweeted, has brought him to a two-way contract with the Warriors.

As can be seen above, Spencer wasn’t always a basketball lover. He played lacrosse just as well as basketball. Some might claim – even better. And with good reason. He attended high school at the Boys Latin School of Maryland where he excelled both as an up-and-coming lacrosse star as well as a gifted basketball player.

Spencer spent his college years at Loyola University and was a sensation in the lacrosse field. He holds the record for being the All-Time assists leader in the NCAA with 231 assists to his name. The Pennsylvania native is also the recipient of the Tewaraaton Award, which is regarded as the Heisman of Larosse. He also received the Jack Turnbull Award, as the nation’s top attackman in 2019 as well as the Lt. Raymond Enners Award as the USILA national player of the year.

But it seems like basketball constantly beckoned him.

Pat Spencer makes the final decision

Despite the rousing success, Spencer did not accept the selection he received from the Premier Lacrosse League in the same year. He used the final year of collegiate eligibility to pursue basketball at Northwestern University, where he was part of the Wildcats.

During his one year with the team, Spencer averaged 10.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. And those are the numbers he posted with the limited basketball experience he had. But he couldn’t complete the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But that did not stop him. Pat left to join the Hamburg Towers in Germany in 2021. Not too long after, he then joined the Capital City Go-Go of the NBA G League.

After that, he moved to the Santa Cruz Warriors, where the 2022 season saw him play for the Warriors after signing an Exhibit 10 contract. Since then, he has continued playing for the G League affiliate. And now, he’s back on a two-way contract with the GSW.
