Stanley Kroenke, the $16.2 billion real estate magnate and sports mogul, is the owner of the Denver Nuggets franchise. It was a great day for the 76-year-old Kroenke when the Nuggets won their first championship in 47 years! Within just an 18-month difference, the billionaire was the recipient of four titles. His other franchises, including the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams, the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, and the National Lacrosse League’s Colorado Mammoth, have all managed to gift him a championship trophy, each.

But it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Stanley also likes basketball. His love for the sport bloomed in Mora, Missouri, a tiny town about 100 miles southeast of Kansas City. While in high school, Kroenke played as a shooting guard and was reportedly recruited by a few small colleges. But it would seem like he gave it up in favor of business. After finishing school, a young Stanley moved to the University of Missouri, where he received his Bachelor of Arts/Science degree.

When he bought the Denver Nuggets in 2000, Kroenke admitted, “One of my dreams was to be involved in a professional basketball team. This is a dream I’ve had for a long time.” (credit: Denver Post) And now, he owns the franchise valued at $3.4 billion as of October 2023. Nikola Jokić and Co. are on their way to holding onto the Larry O’Brien Trophy this season, too.

Kroenke Sports & Entertainment: the world’s second-most valuable sports empire

The parent company that owns all of Stanley Kroenke’s sports holdings is Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. Valued at $15.59 billion under the Forbes’ List of Most Valuable Sports Empires 2024, KSE was started in 1999. Stan started with a stake in the Rams, before moving on to the Nuggets and NHL’s Avalanche. But that was just the start of his acquisition.

By 2010, Kroenke bought the remaining interest in the Rams and on August 25, KSE became the full owner of the NFL franchise. And still, KSE had no intention of stopping. The company went on to establish its fingerprint in real estate, esports, and media. Married to the Walmart heiress Ann Walton Kroenke, he also spearheaded the development of apartment buildings and shopping centers with many of his plazas near Walmart stores. His real estate comes close to about 60 million square feet.

Of course, known more popularly for his ownership of Arsenal F.C. and W.F.C., Stan’s interests were varied. He owns a winery in Napa Valley, called the Screaming Eagle. But perhaps his most peculiar acquisition is the ownership of working ranches. According to Forbes, the man owns 1.6 billion acres of ranches across the U.S.A. and Canada.

Stan Kroenke truly is a diverse individual. His business acumen has been nothing short of pure brilliance. With the NBA planning on expanding its reach, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Kroenke ends up being the owner of a Las Vegas-based team. If that doesn’t work out, we can be sure he will have a real estate hold around it. But considering his history, when Kroenke puts his mind to something, it works out in his favor.
