Zion Williamson is entering the 2025-26 season with new hope for himself and the New Orleans Pelicans. Though major injuries have marked his career, the former 1st overall pick appears focused and healthy. With his high-impact play (when available), Zion’s availability will be the most important factor in the Pelicans’ ability to compete at a level worthy of reaching the playoffs this season.

The 2024-25 season was filled with unfortunate timing for New Orleans. Zion played only 30 games, premier defender Herb Jones missed most of the year with a shoulder injury, and Trey Murphy III was lost to an injury to his rotator cuff in March. All of this, combined with point guard Dejounte Murray tearing his Achilles, resulted in the team never reaching their full potential, making their health a clear priority going into next season.
Pelicans head coach Willie Green recently praised Zion’s progress in offseason workouts. Marc J Spears revealed on ESPN, “They were actually out here at Loyola Marymount University, the whole team working out, playing five on five. He looked great. Great shape.” He also emphasized that when Zion is on the court, the team has a major advantage: “This is a guy that’s only played over 30 games twice in his career… but when Zion plays, they win.”

Spears highlighted that Green valued Zion’s effect on the morale and dynamics of the team, noting, “He’s showing a lot more leadership… when Zion plays, he’s one of the best players in the league.” Green’s comments show that the franchise values Zion not just as a scorer or an athlete, but as a central guiding figure and have noted how he elevates the performance of those around him.
His leadership is welcome now, especially since their 13th overall pick, Derik Queen, has been sidelined following surgery on his left wrist for a torn ligament. Zion’s ability to bring the team together and ensure they’re locked in for the upcoming season is essential, given that despite making it to year 7, Zion has not yet played in the playoffs. So far, things seem good. Murray recently posted a video of him dunking, showing off his remarkable recovery from the Achilles injury, and both Jones and Murphy are now participating in full-speed scrimmages.

A fully available Zion could also transform the Pelicans’ season on the court. His scoring, elite athleticism, and underrated passing ability make him a game-changing talent when available. With roster additions of Jordan Poole and Kevon Looney providing additional depth going into the next season, New Orleans has the potential to compete for the playoffs and make a surprise impact in the Western Conference.
Looking at the future, the Pelicans are opening training camp in New Orleans before heading out to Australia for a preseason exhibition. Suppose Zion can stay healthy and maintain his offseason form. In that case, he can finally realize his potential without injuries ravaging the team, giving the Pelicans a real chance to make themselves relevant in 2025-26.
Joe Dumars Emphasizes Responsibility and Accountability as Zion Williamson Prepares for Next Season
The team has prioritized responsibility and accountability at every level, with NBA legend Joe Dumars taking over front office decisions for the Pelicans as the new head of basketball operations. Dumars has made it clear to the whole team that professionalism and discipline are non-negotiable terms, addressing major issues like Zion‘s suspension last season for being late to a team plane.

While on the court, Zion is an impactful player, capable of influencing the game in a way few others can. Dumars and the Pelicans’ focus going forward is ensuring he maintains a consistent, high level of play through guidance and improved habits.
The 2025-26 season will put this new culture to the test, as the Pelicans look to optimize their roster contributions while keeping Zion healthy. Dumars should expect scrutiny from both fans and analysts, who will watch to see if his approach can lead to results on court and if New Orleans can compete at the highest level with a responsible, accountable superstar.
