1 Woman Inside Russian Prison Can Really Trouble Brittney Griner and Others

Brittney Griner has been in the news for quite some time now. Earlier this year, she was arrested on charges of smuggling illegal drugs into Russia. Following months of legal battle, she has been sentenced to nine years in one of the harshest penal colonies in the world.

Griner will be serving her time in the IK-2 penal colony. The prison is infamous for inhumane working conditions, abusive guards, and hostile inmates. Moreover, according to a report, it seems one prisoner can cause a lot of problems for Griner. The colonies have a long-standing tradition of recruiting an inmate who is in charge of running things.

One prisoner in charge of running things can cause problems for Brittney Griner

Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner will be serving nine long and tough years in the IK-2 penal colony. According to reports, the prison is infamous for its harsh surroundings.

Abuse, harassment, and overwork are common at the prison. Moreover, according to a report, the prisons have an old tradition of appointing a single inmate to look after things. She assumes the designation of the head monitor and they are in charge of organizing the prisoners’ daily lives.

“A woman recruited by the prison administration is designated as “head monitor” and at night prisoners are left virtually unsupervised”, said the report.

Griner’s move to IK-2 terrified former inmate

Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner’s problems have just started. Confirmation about her location sent headlines around the world with people concerned about her safety.

A former inmate turned activist, Nadia Tolokonnikova divulged spine-chilling details about the penal colony. Moreover, she said, “I’m terrified that Brittney Griner was moved to IK-2.”

According to Tolokonnikova, the 820-capacity penal colony is infamous for its “slave-like conditions”. Prisoners indulge in manual labor for up to 17 hours a day without any breaks.

Moreover, she also revealed that in case Griner decides to speak out against the oppression, the whole prison might suffer. Tolokonnikova protested against the human rights abuses in Russian penal colonies by undergoing a hunger strike. She currently is a member of Pussy Riot and actively works in the field of human rights.
