Even though Bulls legend Dennis Rodman had an amazing NBA career, his childhood was quite tough as he grew up. ‘The Worm’ has won five NBA championships, was a two-time all-star, and a two-time defensive player of the year as well. Inducted into the hall of fame in 2011, Rodman held the record for most rebounds per game for seven consecutive years.

Dennis was quite a controversial personality off the court. He was best known for his defense and rebounding skills but also made the headlines for clashing with other players, having multiple piercings, and dying his hair in different colors.

Dennis Rodman and his tough childhood

In an interview with Jackie MacMullan on the show ?NBA on ESPN,? Rodman touched on various topics about his life. Rodman was homeless when he was about 18 years old. Dennis had stolen quite a lot of merchandise from a store at the airport. He was then arrested, but the charges were dropped as all the merchandise was recovered.

However, his mother was not happy about Dennis going to jail, and she decided to throw him out. Plus the fact that he wasn?t working played a factor in his mom taking that decision. In the interview, Rodman talks about him playing in a tournament that was a mile away from his mother?s house. He ended up winning the MVP, but after leaving the gym, he had nowhere to go.?

So he was standing on the curb, deciding on which direction to go, where he would stay that night and what he would eat. So as Rodman sat down on the curb, he saw a man and a woman walking toward him. He didn?t pay much attention to them. The woman came up to him and stuck a card in his face. He looked up and saw his mother.

His mother gave him the card, said happy birthday, and walked away. And when Dennis opened the card, he found $20 in it. Rodman told Jackie what the card read. He said, “even though you live in the streets, I still love you.” The card also read, “if you wanna come back home, come back home but you have to get a job.”

Rodman gives credit to basketball

The Worm certainly had a rough childhood. He has often said that if it weren?t for basketball, he?d either be dead or in jail. Considering Rodman?s upbringing and his early life choices, he really made it big. Not just making it to the NBA, but winning five championships with two different dynasties. He won two championships with the Detroit Pistons and three with the Chicago Bulls.
