Bulls Legend Dennis Rodman Was Fined $20K After Rage Filled Outburst Including A Head Butt In 1996: “It’s Getting Really Ridiculous”

Dennis Rodman, infamous for his off-the-court antics, once received a six-game ban and a fine of $20k for head-butting referee Ted Bernhardt in a home game against the New Jersey Nets in March 1996. The incident took place in his first season with the Chicago Bulls. Already having a poor reputation in the league, The Worm was, once again, displaying his mettle in the game.

Dennis Rodman took a career-altering decision of joining his arch-rivals Chicago Bulls in 1995. The Worm achieved many things during his tenure in the Bulls, but some incidents like these made fans witness the true character of the Worm.

Dennis Rodman head-butting the referee

During the game against the New Jersey Nets, Rodman received a second technical foul in his first quarter. With this foul, Rodman got ejected from the court, which led to the incident. Thereafter, the Worm head-butted the referee just above his left eye, followed by ripping his shirt off and finally storming off the court. Amidst that, he also knocked out a water cooler. Ultimately resulting in the league taking strict action against him. He got suspended for six games with no pay and also received a fine of $20k.

Rodman went on to criticize the decisions of higher officials of the league. He accused the league of singling him out. He finished off by saying, “They make an example out of Dennis Rodman. I don’t care. This is really out of hand. It’s getting really ridiculous, picking on me.”

The frustration of possibly getting picked out by the league was felt through Rodman’s words. The Worm’s distaste might not have been untrue since Ted Bernhardt was later accused of rigging in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals of 2002.

Dennis Rodman wanted to present himself as a performer and not just an athlete. The resignation of Chuck Daly from his coaching position fuelled these activities further. Thereafter, Rodman began to draw attention to his bizarre antics rather than his gameplay.

He was most famous for his multiple tattoos and piercings, along with having tumultuous relationships with Carmen Electra and Madonna. But these activities almost went on to destroy his career if he had not joined the Bulls. With the Bulls, he emerged with several achievements despite indulging in his antics time and time again.
