The WNBA season has almost come to its conclusion. After all the teams battled it out, two teams remain. The Las Vegas Ace and the Connecticut Sun are facing off in the WNBA finals. However, that isn’t the only battle the league has had to fight. Notably, the absence of Brittney Griner took a huge toll on the WNBA stars. But the Phoenix Mercury center is facing the situation with nothing but bravery.

One of the biggest stars of the WNBA couldn’t even step foot for a single second. Notably, Griner traveled to Russia to play basketball. However, the possession of cannabis oil saw her be detained at an airport near Moscow. From there, the WNBA star went to trial, and the verdict devastated many Americans, especially those in the NBA and WNBA community. Griner was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison.

As tough times loom over, it seems the Phoenix Mercury center is staying positive. WNBA commissioner revealed how she received a letter from Griner which showed her true strength.

Brittney Griner isn’t done with the fight

When Griner’s shocking detention made headlines, commissioner Cathy Engelbert was at a loss. In fact, she was against the entire situation and called Griner’s arrest unjust. Still keeping the same stance, the executive revealed a crucial detail. Notably, Brittney Griner’s private letter had three words that sparked hope in her and the basketball world as well. The three-word message read, “I’m staying strong.”.

Engelbert said before the WNBA finals: “I recently received a handwritten letter from BG, and I am so inspired by her courage in the face of enormous adversity. We are fully focused on getting her home safely, and she remains such an important part of the WNBA family.”

The work to bring Griner back to the USA still seems to be going on. Sharing Engelbert’s opinion, president Joe Biden said the country would do its all to bring the basketball star back. A potential prison swap might be the answer. Likewise, Engelbert urged Russia to be more active in the conversation.
