John Salley talks about the 1988 NBA finals
John Salley revealed that when he was out with his friends in Los Angeles, a police officer stopped his car and made him sit on the curb and wait. He added the police officer checked his license and made him wait so that they wouldn’t reach the Marina.
Salley claimed, “This is the crazy thing, that was the police officer loving the Lakers. It was you know, you had to watch where you eat. Like, it wasn’t just the Lakers. It was the referees living in Ladera, living in the valley.”
The Lakers won the 1988 NBA finals against the Detroit Pistons 3-4.
The Pistons were a team that could not make any significant impact in the NBA until the late 80s. Since the introduction of the NBA in 1949, the Lakers and the Boston Celtics dominated the league. However, the Pistons also rose to power during the 1980s. The Pistons strengthened their squad with the introduction of Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars. They, along with their teammate helped the Pistons reach the NBA finals in 1988. Unfortunately, they lost the game finals to the Lakers despite a terrific performance by Isiah.

After the 1988 finals loss against the Lakers, the Pistons were out for revenge. The two again faced each other in the 1989 NBA finals. This time, nothing could stop the Pistons as they swept the mighty Lakers.
The masterclass of Joe Dumars, along with the help of Isiah Thomas, got the Pistons their first-ever NBA championship. They also went on to win the title in 1990. They became the third team after the Lakers and Celtics to win back-to-back championships.
