The NBA has seen a long list of fines given out to players. Whether it be tussling with a fan or derogatory incidents, the league has a strict governing policy. We’ve seen league MVPs like Nikola Jokic and Stephen Curry be fined, along with mediocre role players. So, in this case, much parity does exist. But, the most common way usually is getting into any kind of intense altercation, verbal or physical. However, fines for comments on Twitter? Now, that is a bridge too far.

But, for this suspended Memphis Grizzlies star, that was exactly the case.

Gilbert Arenas got a fine…for Twitter?

Throughout his career, Arenas became a popular albeit controversial figure. Whether as the first true scoring point guard or for his locker room exploits, Gil was a famous man. However, one of the more surprising incidents happened during his serving a suspension.

During the lockout year, the NBA moderated Twitter activity for everyone. For Gilbert, with his hot takes, getting in trouble was an inevitability. And that is exactly what happened. In the season that he spent on the sidelines, it finally happened.

As he details it, the NBA fined him an astounding $50,000. Understandably, he was upset. “I was just gone, yeah,?I lost it, like fining me 50,00. I don’t even have a job.” He detailed how the NBA put a guy specifically for his activity.

But a fine for Twitter activity was the least of worries for No Chill Gil during his career. While he blasted the NBA for Ja Morant’s suspension, perhaps the similarities between his and Ja’s cases struck a nerve with the former Washington Wizards star.

Arenas’ suspension from the NBA

14 years ago, Gilbert Arenas faced a 50-game ban from the NBA. The cause? Bringing firearms to the locker room. A direct violation of NBA and D.C. norms, he faced harsh suspensions. However, the situation escalated.

Arenas and teammate Javair Crittenton got into a heated argument and pulled guns on each other in the locker room. A few weeks later, Gilbert violated DC laws again, carrying an unlicensed pistol. The successive black marks against him caused the NBA to enforce a severe ban on him.

As a result, Arenas missed the 2009-10 NBA season. Over the years, he’s learned his lesson and even offered advice to a fellow Memphis guard, Ja. Let’s hope that the league and players can find common ground and such stories become harder to come by.
