The Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner celebrated her 32nd birthday in a Russian prison on October 18. The 2014 WNBA champ is stuck in Russia since February after vape cartridges filled with cannabis oil were found in her luggage. Griner was detained for months before being sentenced to nine years in the Russian prison. To mark her birthday, the WNBA, BG’s wife Cherelle, her friends, colleagues, and family have launched the #WeAreBG social campaign to remind her that she has not been forgotten.

Recently, LeBron James’ athlete empowerment brand ‘Uninterrupted’ supported the campaign, vowing to not rest until Brittney Griner returns home. The Los Angeles Lakers star has spoken openly on numerous occasions in support of Griner’s return since she was first detained by the Russian authorities.

The 8x WNBA all-star applied for an appeal hearing after being sentenced to nine years in prison under drug possession and smuggling charges. The appeal is scheduled for October 25. The hearing will define Griner’s fate as she fears being forced to work in labor camps.

If the court finalizes the order, BG would be sent to the infamous Russian penal colonies to serve her sentence. However, her family and the government are doing all they can for Griner’s safe release from Russia.
