After humiliating the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 2, the Golden State Warriors crossed swords with their California rivals in Game 3 last night. The Lakers got their revenge and how. Los Angeles blew out the Warriors by 30 points to take a lead in the series. Prior to the start of the game, however, Stephen Curry‘s father, Dell Curry, made a surprising claim about his son, which prompted NBA fans to react to the comments.

Stephen Curry has led the league in scoring twice over his illustrious career. Although he is primarily listed as a point guard, the four-time NBA champion is more commonly known for his scoring prowess rather than his playmaking skills. So Dell’s comment on his son’s playing style caught the NBA world off guard.

Traditionally, point guards are expected to run the team’s offense by controlling the ball and running the plays. They are also responsible for controlling the pace of the game. Curry is also listed as a point guard. Since he is the Warriors’ main scorer, the nine-time NBA All-Star doesn’t have the assist numbers that PGs usually have. However, his father had a different take when it comes to Steph’s role on the team.

Dell weighed in on his son’s playing style after being asked about his thoughts on his son playing as a hyper guard by Festus Ezeli. The 58-year-old said, “Fourteen-year veteran, he’s seen it all. I think he now understands how teams are going to guard him and the gravity that he has on the offensive end.” He added that one should trust his teammates to do the work when he is getting double or triple-teamed. The former Charlotte Hornets player added, “That’s where he continues to evolve.”

Dell continued, “He’s always been a pass-first guy since high school days, who has learned how to score with the best of them. But if you force him to pass the ball, he’s going to make the right read.”

Despite “Incredible” Floor Game, Warriors Ace Draymond Green Takes Blame for Stephen Curry’s Night on the Court

Curry’s father’s claim about him was pretty surprising as he has a career average of 6.5 assists per game till now while Magic Johnson, widely considered the best point guard of all time, averaged 11.2 assists per game over his career. Moreover, Curry’s best season in terms of assists was way back in the 2013-14 season; he averaged 8.5 dimes a night. Understandably, Dell’s statement didn’t sit well with fans.

Fans reflect on Dell Curry’s comments

Fans chimed in on Twitter not long after the clip was shared. They didn’t concur with him and proceeded to slam Dell for his take. One fan wrote, “Just a flat out lie lmao.” Here are some more responses:

A few users made fun of his statements with one fan commenting, “Now all of a sudden he a pass first guy.”
