As any NBA star would, Russell Westbrook receives tons of attention from the media. Westbrook’s role as one of the Big 3 on the Los Angeles Lakers roster justifies such media attention. He plays alongside LeBron James, Anthony Davis as a part of the Lakers’ Big 3. Recently, one of Westbrook’s former teammates and a current NBA star defended the former on social media.
NBA and Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant stood by Russell Westbrook on Instagram. ‘theScore’ posted a meme on Instagram that received a considerable amount of attention with Lakers fans trolling Westbrook. The meme compared what version of Westbrook, the Lakers expected to what version of Westbrook they actually received. The post seemed to imply that Westbrook had regressed during his time at the Lakers.
Kevin Durant commented on the post saying, “🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅”. Durant seemingly hinted at the rottenness of the meme posted by the Instagram page. Many other NBA fans replied to Durant’s comment, with some complimenting him for sticking up for Westbrook.

Kevin Durant standing up for Russell Westbrook is not surprising, as they were both former teammates. They played alongside each other at the Oklahoma City Thunder. Durant started his NBA career in 2007 with the Thunder and played at the franchise until 2016.

Russell Westbrook and his troubles at the Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers signed Russell Westbrook in the offseason before the 2021-22 NBA season. They seemingly expected Westbrook to slot in easily alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis. An NBA title was presumably among one prediction that both parties hoped for.
However, their title dreams have come crashing down as the Lakers remain 7th in the Western Conference. Westbrook has negatively contributed to many of the franchise’s losses this season with his costly turnovers. He currently remains third in turnovers this season. Westbrook and the Laker’s NBA title hopes remain very slim this season with a current record of 23-23.
