Last week, Gianni Infantino called out the detractors who criticized the decision to select Qatar as the host country for the tournament despite scores of allegations of human rights violations and controversial LGBTQ+ policies.
In a recent press conference, Infantino criticized the perception of the western countries towards the LGBQT+ policies of Qatar. He said that he understood the current feelings of the Qataris, Arabs, and Africans. Because he was bullied in his childhood for having freckles and red hair. The FIFA president also asked the participating nations to play football without involving themselves in any political situations. In other words, he wanted them to respect the domestic policies of the host nation.

Abdul-Jabbar called out Infantino for his ignorant remarks. In fact, he pointed out that the mistreatment faced by the FIFA president is in no way comparable to the life-threating dangers minority groups face on a daily basis in countries like Qatar. “I’m still reeling from his tone-deaf comparison of being bullied for having red hair and freckles to the kind of violent, life-threatening, rights-denying abuse the LGBTQ+ community faces,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Abdul-Jabbar applauded the initiative taken by the US men’s national team despite the warning of Infantino. The six-time MVP said he was proud when he found them training with a group of migrant construction workers.
The Los Angeles Lakers legend also appreciated how the team chose to wear a rainbow flag on their crest to show support for the LGBQT+ communities. Abdul-Jabbar finished off by saying, “That’s a win right there.” which probably depicted his appreciation of the activities of his country’s national soccer team.

Furthermore, he stated no country goes by without committing regrettable acts. However, he pointed out that, “There’s a difference when the regrettable act is lying or stealing and when it is rape or murder.” His statement reflected his view towards the accusations made on Qatar regarding their anti-LGBQT+ policies and mistreatment of immigrants.
