“My Mom Bought Me Barbie Dolls”: Brittney Griner Once Revealed Her Childhood Habits Which Would “Surprise No One”

Brittney Griner is arguably one of the best WNBA players in the history of the league. A walking giant, she shattered records as soon as she stepped on the stage. However, growing up her life was rough. With her large frame, she was a victim of bullying. But that didn’t stop her from openly expressing herself. And it all started growing up in Houston.
Griner became a revolutionary athlete in 2013. The 31-year-old became the first openly gay athlete to be endorsed by Nike. She has been a beacon for the LGBTQ+ community. Griner has set an example for many like her to not be afraid. She took a major step by publicly coming out to the world. Moreover, her social work precedes her as well. In 2017, she donated $5000 to an LGBTQ Youth center in Phoenix which was set on fire. Moreover, she also went on a shoe drive to donate to the needy.

However, her most notable effort was probably writing her memoir, “In My Skin: My Life On and Off the Basketball Court”. Brittney Griner narrated her journey of unapologetically expressing herself, no matter what. And it seems it all started when her mom got her barbie dolls.
Brittney Griner details childhood shenanigans
In her memoir, Griner offered a piece into her childhood group up in Houston. Unsurprisingly, she too was a normal notorious teenager. From sneakily staying up till late to playing games, Griner did it all. The WNBA superstar grew up loving playing with toys such as Hot Wheels and G.I. Joe. Her love was so much that the barbies her mom got her became camo soldiers.

Brittney Griner spoke about her childhood room in Houston in her memoir and her unsurprising way of treating barbie dolls. She wrote, “The floor next to the dresser was covered with my favorite toys, including stuffed animals that my dad had won for me playing arcade games. Next to those were the Hot Wheels and G.I. Joes I played with them when I was really little. My mom had brought me Barbie dolls at some point, but I cut off all their hair and painted them green and black, which I’m sure will surprise no one.”

Griner has come a long way from her childhood days in Houston. She probably couldn’t have imagined being such a force growing up. Serving as an inspiration to many, her story allowed the community to know her own struggle. Brittney Griner stood up for what she chose, and at the end of the day, she came out on top.
