The first pick of the 2022 NBA draft Paolo Banchero was already a well-known name among NBA fans even before he entered the league. His astonishing performances at Duke spoke volumes about his talent and helped him cement himself as the No. 1 pick in the draft. However, it seems like not everyone was familiar with the name of the Magic Star. In fact, the 20-year-old prodigy recently shared a story of getting mistaken for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes is one of the premier players in the National Football League. He won the Super Bowl in 2020, and even got crowned as the Super Bowl MVP. Therefore, with all these accomplishments, it’s fairly natural for reporters to chase after him. Or chase after others who look like him.

In a recent interview with ‘JJ Redick’ in The Old Man and the Three Podcast, Banchero shared a crazy story of getting mistaken by the F1 announcer Martin Brundle as the Chiefs quarterback. At the very beginning of the interview, one of the co-hosts asked the 20-year-old prodigy whether he was ever mistaken for $450 million worth Patrick Mahomes. The Magic forward replied “One time,” and went on to recount the story.

Banchero started off by saying Brundle came to him and tapped his shoulders while he was doing a track walk during a visit to the Miami Grand Prix earlier this year. The Magic Star noted that at that time he didn’t know who Brundle was and also didn’t know there were cameras all around, as he had never been to an F1 event.

Subsequently, he added that the reporter asked him, “Patrick you know what is it like yada yada yada..” Banchero, upon hearing this was a little startled and asked him “What’s going on”? Finally, the announcer upon recognizing his mistake went away.

Banchero admitted to not realizing the mix-up at first. In fact, he was a little overwhelmed with the whole thing happening so fast. However, after realizing the situation properly, he laughed it off on social media. Patrick Mahomes also reacted to the hilarious confusion, tweeting, “Bro ain’t no way.(laughing emojis)”
