Brittney Griner has begun her sentence at the IK-2 penal colony in Mordovia as her only hope of freedom lies in a prisoner swap deal between Moscow and Washington. The WNBA All-Star was recently transferred to a far-off penal colony where she will be serving her nine-year sentence for charges of drug trafficking levied on her for bringing trace amounts of cannabis oil to Russia. Amid the turmoil, a Baylor University professor has criticized Griner’s former university for failing to show active support during her detention in Russia. 

Carroll McDaniel Hanks professor of Literature ad Culture, Greg Garrett, recently called out Baylor’s lack of contribution in raising awareness about BG’s ‘wrongful detention’ in Russia. While Garrett did not teach Griner at Baylor, he has fond memories of her longboarding past the front avenue. Garrett shared that Brittney Griner stood out with her 6’9 height, flying dreadlocks, and extraordinary skills on the basketball court.

Moreover, the Baylor professor reckoned that he followed BG’s career with pride. He was inspired by her talents at the University and her bravery in discovering herself. Garrett also pointed out the lack of effort from Baylor University during such a tough time for their former student. 

Baylor Professor shows support for Brittney Griner

In a recent article on Baptist News, Garrett expressed his sadness at Baylor’s silence at large on the detention of ‘one of her most famous students.’ Notably, Garrett reckoned that Baylor University has always stood up for its students, staff, regents, and alumni as a family. The veteran professor added, “Baylor folks should have been leading the charge to raise awareness about Brittney’s wrongful imprisonment.”

However, as per the Baylor professor, only head coach Nicki Collen has been speaking in support of Brittney Griner. Thus, he felt that the University needed to talk more openly about Brittney Griner’s detention in Russia.

Garrett suggests the reason behind Baylor’s silence

Greg Garrett stated that Baylor is a private Christian institute. Thus, her argument against playing the national anthem in the WNBA and her sexuality might have something to do with the University’s silence.

Moreover, Garrett said BG did not open up to the world about her sexuality until the WNBA drafts in 2013. It was because former coach Kim Mulkey had asked her to be discrete about it. Hence, Garrett suggested that the University needed to do all it could to get the WNBA star back home.
