The US government and the American basketball fraternity have also spoken out against the ‘wrongful detention’ of the WNBA star in Russia. As Griner begins her nine-year sentence, a Syracuse University professor’s strong take hasn’t been well received by sports fans on social media.

The Assistant Professor of Political science, Jenn. M. Jackson had recently highlighted Brittney Griner‘s incarceration with a recent tweet. Dr. Jackson holds a PhD from the University of Chicago. They have been an active advocate for Black politics, Black feminism, gender & sexuality issues, and other social causes.

Syracuse Professor makes bold claim about the Brittney Griner situation

Dr. Jackson recently shared a tweet claiming that people have been more focused on the Kyrie Irving-Kanye West anti-semitic saga instead of Brittney Griner’s incarceration in Russia. According to her, this kind of disparity has its root cause in Griner’s sexuality and her gender.

Jenn M. Jackson wrote, “The way y’all fight for Kyrie and Kanye and not Brittney Griner is patriarchal af. It’s also misogynoir.”

The women’s rights expert called out people for their lack of support for Brittney Griner. They deduced that Griner was not getting enough attention due to the ‘patriarchal’ inclination of society. In addition, Dr. Jackson stated that BG was being left out due to the deep-rooted antagonism towards Black women in our culture, deeming the scenario as ‘misogynoir.’

Many experts have claimed that Griner would have been home sooner if she were a renowned NBA star with the same level of popularity. Echoing a similar sentiment, Dr. Jackson felt that BG’s prolonged detention might be a gender-related issue.
