Shaquille O’Neal is one of the most loving men on the planet. While prone to temper tantrums, his jousts with Charles Barkley or other NBA players are seen more for their humor than actual beef. Shaq’s charitable personality and his deeds of kindness are the stuff of legend. However, one place where Diesel himself claims that he failed was in his marriage. After five years of marriage, Shaq initially filed for divorce in 2007. However, the couple withdrew the decision a while later as they worked to fix the relationship. But it wasn’t meant to be. In November 2009, his wife Shaunie filed for divorce.

The separation became official in 2011. Since then, Shaq has expressed his regret stating that he made mistakes and was “greedy”. Recently, Shaunie detailed a key aspect that has improved her current relationship. She went one step further, stating how the welcome change was a first in her life.

The difference between Shaquille O’Neal and Shaunie’s current marriage?

Shaunie and her husband, Keion Henderson, were guests on The Full Replay Discussion. During the interview, Shaunie was asked about the key ingredient that made the two of them work so well. Shaunie’s reply was simple – communication.

As she explained the process of the pair’s conversations, she seemed to take a subtle shot at her previous marriage with Shaq. “Communication is huge, which no one told me the first time around.” The rest of the answer, however, defined a truly wonderful process.

As she explained, “One thing my husband did… What’s our goal for the next month? The next 3 months? The next 6 months… It went all the way to 5 years.” She voiced how the experience was different from anything she knew previously. “I have never… In a relationship, in a partnership, ever sat down and done our goals that way.”

Shaunie further elaborated on her point in the caption. She pointed out how much effort communication takes and stressed how that, in turn, made the bond stronger. Citing the power of listening, she wrote, “Marriage takes listening – really listening – without thinking what you’ll say next.”

Seeing Shaunie do so well in a happy, healthy marriage must give Shaq some modicum of peace. Perhaps it was communication, ultimately, that was the problem between the two. As we know, se*ual issues were not the problem at hand, as Shaq has that bit figured out!
