The US basketball team suffered their first Olympic Games loss since 2004 with an 83-76 defeat against France. Tokyo Olympics 2020 hasn’t started that well for Kevin Durant and Co. and there are more obstacles coming their way.

NBA fans have particularly shown immense excitement this year with several All-stars featuring in Tokyo. The US basketball team is a power-packed roster on paper. Some of the superstars included are Damian Lillard, Jayson Tatum, Draymond Green, and Khris Middleton. However, their first match against France wasn’t reflective of the brimming talent on a single team.

The last time these two teams locked horns against each other, the results weren’t as different. France beat USA in the 2019 FIBA World Cup quarter-finals. And this time it’s their consecutive win over the dominating favorites.

Luka Doncic posing challenge in the Tokyo Olympics opening matchup

Other than NBA’s prominence in Team USA, other favorites this season are the Slovenians. Headed by the Dallas Mavericks All-star Luka Doncic, Slovenia is off to a great start in the Olympics. Doncic knocked in 48 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 assists in their opening match against Argentina. He has stepped up for his country and seems to be the ultimate threat to Team USA’s legacy.

It’s a battle between the best stars and the Olympics will get intense with eliminations heading closer. ESPN analyst Tim MacMahon weighs the bigger challenge for Team USA between France and Slovenia. “I’m going to go with France just because they just beat Team USA. They beat Team USA in 2019. That’s a group of guys that have had a lot of success together. A program that has a lot of continuity, has high caliber.

MacMahon further added – “But, Slovenia is clearly a threat because Luka is the most dominant player in this Olympic tournament.”
