After their brilliant victory in the Final of the NCAA Women’s Division 1 tournament, the Angel Reese-led LSU Tigers were supposed to visit the White House as part of a longstanding tradition of National Champions being recognized by the President for their achievement. However, First Lady Jill Biden decided to invite the runners-up of the tournament as well. This decision attracted a lot of backlash across the country and the invitation was eventually retracted. Recently, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal addressed Jill Biden inviting the Iowa Hawkeyes to the White House.

The Big Diesel is quite outspoken in his opinions, he doesn’t hesitate to voice out his opinions on pressing affairs happening around the country. However, the Big Diesel usually avoids talking about politicians and political issues. But Shaq made an exception this time to address the alleged racial undertones behind Jill Biden’s invitation.

Shaq was back again, hosting his podcast, The Big Podcast, with his regular panel of friends, Nischelle Turner and Spice Adams. During the show, Turner asked Shaq about his thoughts on Jill Biden inviting Iowa State to come to the White House along with the champions LSU. She said, “What did you think about that? Because, you know, we are in this era of participation trophies.”

The four-time champion, a former LSU star himself, replied, “No, but that’s not what it was about…You know what it was about. I’m not going to mention it.” Turner responded, “We can say it. It became a race issue. It became a team of all Black girls beating a team of all White girls.” Following this, Shaq proceeded to explain what he actually meant.

While admitting that he doesn’t like to throw the word ‘race’ around just like that, the 15x All-Star said no one ever mentioned the second team when he or other champions went to the White House. Shaq further added, “But the fact that it was that versus that, and the other that lost, that’s when they wanted to make it a participation: ‘Oh, they lost, but they were there and all that.’ I thought that was out of pocket.” Adams and the Los Angeles Lakers legend further went on to agree with the fact that LSU’s name wouldn’t have been mentioned if Iowa won the championship.

Subsequently, Shaq said that Iowa’s highlight moment came when they beat South Carolina. According to the Big Fella, the Hawkeyes thought that the Championship wouldn’t be a hard task to accomplish. But LSU had too many ‘dawgs’, who decided to turn the tide.
